What path do you usually take to get to LAX Andy?
Usually MAN-IAD (or MAN-ORD) on BD, then IAD/ORD-LAX on UA. Although last time I flew ex LHR with UA – need to keep my flying in Star Alliance to get frequent flyer miles! 🙂

Skymonster, how long are you in Southern California for?
I’m home again now, but because my boss is based in Orange County, I suspect I’ll be back again fairly soon.

Thanks for all the comments guys…
They all seem to be of special note to me, skymonster. 😀
Sadly (sic!) I’ve been to LAX too many times this past year or so for it to be exciting to me anymore – my boss is based in Orange County! 😎
FWIW, the UA 757 is one of the dedicated “Premium Service” a/c just recently fitted with all first/business/economy plus seats and used only on JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO – they will be rare birds elsewhere on the UA network.

There is a fine balance to be made between higher the operating costs of older airplanes (i.e. increased maintenance, greater fuel burn, lower reliability, etc.) and the costs of acquiring new airplanes (high lease rates, capital tied up, etc). Northwest got it right in an environment where there were plenty of older airplanes available and therefore resale rates were low. However, they are more vulnerable than some other airlines to higher oil prices, and a sustained or further hike in oil prices could be more damaging to NW than to some of the operators of newer and more efficient a/c. Only time will tell, but NW and CO prove that both strategies can work.

Do you know what this ugly 727 is made for?
N289MT is a former American Airlines 727-223. It is now registered to Raytheon Corporation (they have a DC-10 too) based at LAX calsign “Voodoo One”, and is used for radar reseach – hence the F16 nose grafted onto the front of it.
