Wasn’t there a plan for a naval Typhoon. May be 60-70 would make sense if it a mixed group like the Americans are going to have (with their F 35 & SH). But then that would require cataputls.

I disagree with the above. As repeatedly discussed earlier, Tejas Mk.2 will have all specs of MRCA and will be able to handle all the missions meant for MRCAs.

It will be multirole yes. But it will not be able to handle the ‘missions’ as good as the MRCA especially the heavy weights like the Super Hornet, Rafale and Eurofighter.

See, as per Mr. Fali Major’s own estimates (given in the same interview), Tejas Mk.2 is expected in the same year as the MRCA winner. So, what problem does IAF have in choosing the Tejas Mk.2 as MRCA instead ?

I agree with Dr. Natarajan’s statement that, and I quote, ” the services prefer Parisan perfumes to our desi Hamaam”, end quote.
    Quote:

As per his interview the Tejas MK2 will be ready a year after the first MRCA is acquired. Ready means IOC IMO there is a long way to go from that to FOC and induction in large numbers.

Please note that for Tejas separate ToT is already sought like Kaveri-Snecma core, EADs consultancy etc.

EADS is helping HAL/ADA with the glitches of the current LCA. And the Snecama core is for the Kaveri engine which has been officaly dissociated from the Tejas programme for the time being.

Why do you think we are keen on ToT ? If we knew it all we won’t be making that demand !

India to get Five Aircraft Carriers.

    From Shiv Aroor’s excellent blog.

Cochin Shipyard to build 5 aircraft carriers

The keel of India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, to be the second warship christened INS Vikrant, will be laid on February 28 at Kochi. But it is now clear that while Cochin Shipyards will build three aircraft carriers in the current 37,500-ton category (the second and third are to be christened INS Viraat and INS Vishaal), design work has already begun in earnest to develop and build two more aircraft carriers with not only much larger displacements, but possibly nuclear propulsion as well. More details soon.

I haven’t heard of any such problems in the Indian Flankers. May be because we use different subsystems ??? like an Indian RWR.

    “Would probably”.

    I’d call it “could possibly”.

Want to bet on whether the deal is going to be decided by then? 🙂

I would rather bet on something less drastic. Anyway I would bet on the field and weapon trials being completed by then making the MIG 35 AESA visit in May next year redundant 😎

ante_climax, I agree Tejas is “not in the running” for MRCA, but that is exactly my view, that it MUST be in the running.

As an example, some illiberal people say people say “backward” class people in India and “upper” class people have their own place. But many others rightly want all people to have same opportunities.

Hence, we must “oppose” the IAF’s myopic viewpoint that Tejas is merely a “light MiG-21 replacement”. The Tejas Mk.2 has all the capabilities to be the MRCA contender. The IAF must accept Tejas as the MRCA, because it is indigenous.

Its rather a poor and touchy example you have given talking about social classes here. Anyway let me assure you that I am of the belief that people should be judged on their merits and not their birth and that i support reservation for the backward classes.

Here I am not saying that the Tejas is not going to be a good plane, may be it will be as good as some of the MRCA contenders for some missions. The problem is that Tejas is not ready yet and we cannot afford to wait. The MK1 Tejas still have some problems to which the help of EADS is thought. And for the MK2 rather than just going for an engine and avionics upgrade, they are going to have bigger wings etc. Which may be good but will take time, and looking at HAL-ADA track record I am not optimistic about a pre-2014-15 induction date. The Airforce has its problems now with its aging fleet and sheer lack of numbers and that’s something they cannot count on a delayed project getting further delayed or not. The ToT from the MRCA will help the LCA and the MCA. 🙂
