ante_climax, I agree Tejas is “not in the running” for MRCA, but that is exactly my view, that it MUST be in the running.
As an example, some illiberal people say people say “backward” class people in India and “upper” class people have their own place. But many others rightly want all people to have same opportunities.
Hence, we must “oppose” the IAF’s myopic viewpoint that Tejas is merely a “light MiG-21 replacement”. The Tejas Mk.2 has all the capabilities to be the MRCA contender. The IAF must accept Tejas as the MRCA, because it is indigenous.
Its rather a poor and touchy example you have given talking about social classes here. Anyway let me assure you that I am of the belief that people should be judged on their merits and not their birth and that i support reservation for the backward classes.
Here I am not saying that the Tejas is not going to be a good plane, may be it will be as good as some of the MRCA contenders for some missions. The problem is that Tejas is not ready yet and we cannot afford to wait. The MK1 Tejas still have some problems to which the help of EADS is thought. And for the MK2 rather than just going for an engine and avionics upgrade, they are going to have bigger wings etc. Which may be good but will take time, and looking at HAL-ADA track record I am not optimistic about a pre-2014-15 induction date. The Airforce has its problems now with its aging fleet and sheer lack of numbers and that’s something they cannot count on a delayed project getting further delayed or not. The ToT from the MRCA will help the LCA and the MCA. 🙂
Optimism shown above for a radar’s “just in time” release, may also be shown by the IAF for the Tejas Mk.2 which will also be ready by the time the MRCA is expected to roll out.
If IAF can be “lenient” to allow a foreign fighter compete without an AESA radar, it should be lenient to allow an indigenous fighter’s Mk.1 version to compete for the MRCA also.
Its by time you come to terms with the reality that the MRCA and LCA are two different programs and will have their own place in the IAF inventory. The Tejas is not in the running for the MRCA so any talk in this regard is just fantasy talk 😉

Its already a decade or so behind schedule. 🙂 Thats kind of inline with Indian procurement but the AF and MOD is serious about it money is already allocated in the Budget. So 🙂 no more delays unless something like a war happens.

Nothing wrong about that. The Indian way of time-scale in mind.
The MRCA had its share of delays and is nearing the end of its delay-cycle. The field trials would be done before that and the weapons/avionics testing is done in the respective countries of origin of the aircraft. So I still don’t get it why they want to bring it here next may.

Are they going to blame Indian RADARs again 🙁

The Zhuk-AE’s final version is expected to be installed on two MiG-35 prototypes that should go to India for evaluation testing in March 2010.
For what ?? In March 2010 ?? By the time the MRCA would probably be decided.

Throw in another $2 mil for personnel, infra, avgas, etc costs and $16 mil per plane per year for nearly everything isn’t out in left field in terms of costs.
The prob is who you pay it too. I doubt we would want to pay the chunk of that much money to EADS. I would think in an Indian deal majority should go to HAL and the rest to whichever company that supplies the aircraft, Lockheed Boeing EADS SAAB etc.
That’s $14 million per plane per year for the full spectrum weaps, service and COO? That sounds ok for a platform like the EF and its generation.
Ideally then all planes of the generation the Rafale and SH should have the similar costs…
I think its partly because they are delivering all the planes and weapons, did they have any offeset clauses like MRCA is going to have. Were the production lines established there. I think HAL is going to be responsible for maintenance and everything in an indian deal. But the prices u mentioned are staggering.
Finally I can see LCA MK1 and MK2 making the deadlines 🙂
