Why has LM failed miserably to convince the IAF/MoD to buy F-35? It should be easy- with the Russians’ price escalations, constant delays, ToT issues etc. I mean surely the F-35 could fulfill IAF’s 5G fighter/MCA roles combined.
The latest rumours suggest the Indian version won’t start development for some time yet, but even at the 11th hour they don’t sign for the F-35. Why?

Could it be they have seen the PAK-FA and are impressed with it’s potential? Isn’t “substantial” Indian funding the ultimate endorsement?
After all, it was designed to match the F-22, something MiG 1.42 failed to do.

No one has convinced anyone anything. The biggest selling point of the F 16IN is a future upgrade to the F 35. The F 35 is not offered to India as of now because of reasons which include American clearance, time frame for delivery etc. The PAK-FA will give us Indians a good level of ToT which can help the development of MCA. Americans don’t even let the Israelis change the radar so there’s the catch in that. If we select F 16 IN, the F 35 will be a good fall back if **** hits the fan with regards to the MCA/PAK FA. And we can afford to wait for the PAK FA for the latter half of 2010s because the MRCA and MKI will be capable of dealing with every existing threat in the region. We are not going to war with the Americans.

Yes PAK-FA makes more sense to people because of the ToT and experience of co-operating in such a programme.

Us getting it or not getting the F 35 won’t change that its a very good aircraft and you won’t see me talking about the ‘inferior flight performance’ of something that is not in service yet. I believe the test pilots some of them very reputed that it handles as good as a clean F 16. That is good enough 😎

The Pattern here is very clear.

    1. The Europeans don’t have stealth = they say stealth is not that important ‘ its just one part of a big puzzle ‘

    2. The Europeans don’t have TVC equiped fighters operational (more because of added maintenance cost rather than the perceived worthlessness am sure) they say that TVC is not good or at best marginal. While many claim an increase in 10-15 % of combat lethality.

    3. How can people here sitting infront of their computers judge the aerodynamic performances of F 35. Wait till at least it is in service. So far the pilot feed backs have been excellent.

‘ Please drop the ‘It must be **** if we don’t have it’ mentality, ty.

Empty weights weren’t given if I recall right. The old MiG-29Ms empty weight was given with 11.5 t, that of the MiG-29K with 12.7 t. So ~12 t is not unrealistic for the MiG-35.

The Ks added weight has to do with the carrier environment it operates in than anything else I believe.

Take out the CFTs, which is sheer ugly to me, then you can say beauty. Well for me, its not really beautiful, but spunky, but I like spunky.

It may not be as beautiful but it is clearly superior especially in BVR 😎

All electric equipment is to be replaced and new computer technology installed. In addition, the vessel’s β€œGranit” missile system will be replaced with new missile models.

Such as ? Will we see the Brahmos in Russian service atlast or will they go for a Klub variant.

Stealth isn’t that new anymore and the principles are known. Anti stealth technologies, more advanced sensors and even new stealth technologies and ECM are researched and also actively developed and tested. In a few years the situation might look quite different, though no one can exactly predict what there will be in 5-10 years. We have yet to wait.

The relative advantage of stealth over non-stealth will be there even if anti stealth measures are successful. For example if a new anti stealth radar sees the raptor 100 kms away. it would probably see the typhoon 200-300 kms away. πŸ™‚

That’s a pretty optimistic assumption, anyway the operators of all these aircraft are allies so you won’t see them fighting against each other, but with each other! HMS+TVC weapons can offset TVC advantage to a large extend, let alone that TVC is just useful in certain regimes of the flight envelope.

Like I said only the Typhoon has HMS the Rafale do not. Are you saying that the Raptors super manaeuvarability will count for nothing against the HMS combo ?

I read that this was funny.

A further perceived advantage of centre stick is one of mechanical protection to the user – pilots may feel safer with a sturdy stick between their legs, even if, in reality, they are not.

    Really ? :diablo:

Guess you think aswell in a WVR fight of either a EF/rafale with HMS and IRS-T/MICA is no match for the raptor with just the Aim-9. True we shouldnt compare.

The EF/Rafale will never get into a WVR battle with the Raptor. The Raptor has Thrust Vectoring to counter any HMS advantage the Euro canards have ( the Rafale like the Raptor do not have it yet) And the Raptor is going to get its on HMS anyway πŸ™‚

Stealth is just one piece of the puzzle, there are alot of other, very important factors. Not just “he is invisible nonsence”. But, no denying, it is very handy

It is the single most important feature of the puzzle in future warfare. Even the no nonsense Russians who do not spend money on new tech until absolutely necessary are going for Stealth. Which means it is going to be key. I think Europe simply missed the fifth gen boat ! . Thankfully America can supply them with F 35 πŸ™‚

(OK sorry for this enthusiast’s intrusion, I won’t interfere anymore. )

Feel free to interfere. People should have fun talking aeroplanes !.

I personally like the centre stick ! don’t know which is better as I am no pilot.

Isn’t EF Typhoon with AESA and TVC a friggin overkill vs Pakistani JF-17 Thunder ?
It doesn’t have the range to be effective on the Chinese side.

I would assume that India is not likely to invade China. At most any conflict between the two nations will be fought along the border, so its not that much of a handicap πŸ˜‰
