I am really ashamed we are not putting money into the R & D of a true cruise missile, one like the tomahawk with thousands of kms of range. Even if the Brahmos work its small payload and poor range would mean it won’t be of that much use anyway. The most worrying thing about the report is the alleged price increase of the Russian components, why are we spineless when dealing with the Russians while even mention of an American arms purchase causes protests from all circles :(. Time to wake up people.
Russians screwing us over Brahmos as well. We may as well develop our own or buy American.
Please the politicans say enough is enough and cut the Ruskis off.
Bigger airframe and wings….

That is impressive, now only if they did a documentary on that !.
To bad that India didn’t get the first IAC constructed in a foreign yard….maybe even two. Which, would still leave India to construct 2-3 more……:(
Its operating costs Scoot, India can only afford two or three now. It will be able to afford more in the 2030s-40s-50s :diablo:
Get F 16 now and F 35 later 🙂 😀
I just gave you some comparative data on specs but you conveniently look the other way. So whats the point?
Here, look at wiki for some straightforward stuff on wingloading, you’ll see why its so important. the blk 60s figures on this are totally out of proportion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wing_loadingUSS.
I am asking for information on Block 60 vipers saying they are less maneuverable, excerpts like Pilots saying so, it being shown in DACT etc.
Lets wait till MRCA field trials and hope there will be some news in public realm about how every ac fared.
Well Sign as I have always maintained the Gripen is my favourite for the MRCA after the F 16. I hope one of those jets win it.
I disagree about the datalink though, IAF would need something that works with its other aircraft like the MKIs. So may need customization in that aspect.
Dear MM11
There were pilot comments on the blk 50/52s agility in comparison to older lighter variants and those pilots clearly stated that the newer versions are less agile, for the reason stated above: WINGLOADING. I’m sure someone can give a direct link to your satisfaction, I haven’t one by hand. As the blk 60 and IN are even more heavy and a bit draggier due the CFTs the situation won’t improve, but get even more worse! That’s simple physics and pretty much basics for anyone who deals with combat aircraft, that you chose to ignore this very simple facts is somewhat annoying, but everyone is free to believe what he wants.
I am not an aviation expert, if you can provide some information about its combat performance I will accept it.
Don’t blame the IAF, the government wanted to act all fair and hold a competiton.
In my honest opinion, both parties are to blame, ADA/HAL for not delivering the plane on time, and IAF for its preference to foriegn equipment and for not being open to the idea of upgrading the Tejas after induction.
I am sure there is also a lot of money involved in commissions and stuff. There is only one robust way to really develop the defense industry. Private players, get the likes of TATA, Birla, L & T etc involved in a larger scale, and many others….and you would see the forces opting for Indian stuff. We will also see the emergence of our defense industry on the world stage. Public undertakings simply cannot compete with the resources of private players. :)…and there dead lines will also be stricter, heads will roll if the project is not completed on time, as for the DRDO, HAL etc they all will get their salaries everymonth irrespective of the pace of the project.
The MRCA is here for the long term, expected to be in service till 2040. So it do not make sense to get already used airframes. It would be an excellent stop-gap measure though, to get the UAE mirages.
I think Dassault should have offered both the Mirage 2000-5 (advanced varient with AESA) and the Rafale in the MRCA. The Mirage would have had an 80% chance of winning it.
I love single engined fighters 🙂
No I love the Mirage 2000, I think we will be upgrading them anyway, I would love if we acquire the UAE Mirages, It makes a lot of sense, But I am not sure if the IAF is going to go for it. They won’t come cheap either. The Mirage would probably be as good or better than the Viper in a dog fight, but in BVR with its AESA, Situational awareness and sensor fusion the Block 60 has the dfinitive edge.
Rafale will be too expensive I think, thats where it could lose out, If the French hold out for much more then it will lose the contract. Its export history is full of such mistake and thats one of the main reasons I think it would not win.
Of all the companies in the competition Lockheed and SAAB are the ones who are really going for it, with dedicated websites and SAAB is taking it even further by starting offices, they also have adds on bus stops.
If the Viper is not going to win I would prefer the Gripen. Smaller planes 🙂
F16IN, while I believe is a better AC than the Super Hornet, thanks to a less draggy airframe, and porbably a more interesting industrial package (if you consider moving the production line to india), isn’t the best bang for the buck of the competitors. Keep in mind that it is still an overweight evolution of a 30 year old design, especially when you consider that you are always going to operate with conformal tanks, which will reduce TWR and drag even more.
So while I believe it’s a very capable aircraft, it is not up to par with competitors like Eurofighter, Rafale or Gripen NG.
Now if india is only looking for a strike aircraft with little dogfight capability, then be my guest. Anyway a HMS + AIM9X will make up for a big part of the lost agility, but it won’t bring much more than what the indian mirage 2000 updated to dash 5 or 9 standard bring to the table.
Nic
I think the TWR given for F 16s with CFT include the weight of the CFTs, I am not sure but if anyone can shed light on this that would be good.
The Rafale is the only aircraft that has a chance to exceed the F 16 IN in multirole capability, but the relative price and other factors may give the Super Viper the edge.
The EF is the best air superiority aircraft of the bunch, but its poor A2G performance and lack of commitment to Captor E. Price etc will knock it out for sure.
The Gripen NG does not have anything over the F 16 IN. F 16 IN has the better radar and can match and exceed the Gripen in all other aspects, Perhaps the Gripen has better aerodynamic performance, but that’s hardly a big thing in today’s battlefields.
The American types have the widest range of weapons available and thats another aspect which would be hard to beat. 😀
Oh and the F 16 IN will exceed the upgraded Mirages in BVR. Situational Awareness Electronic Warfare etc. :dev2:
Sharing stuff with the blk 60 doesn’t mean it’s the same. There will be changes and I would be more than surprised to see the F-16IN in Aeroindia. They will sent something else, because the F-16IN does not exist in its proposed form, though the blk 60 might be somewhat close. It’s reasonable they will use a blk 60 on loan from the UAE for the evaluation.
Do you want proof that it will be there at aero India ?
http://www.lockheedmartin.com/aeronautics/aeroindia/index.html
Please read and it clearly says the Super Viper and not any other Viper. It will be the real thing.
How do you know it do not exist in the propsoed form ? Lockheed appear very confident and I am sure they have a prototype, which is not all that hard with a few minor differences from the Block 60
There is a code one Magazine article on F 16 evolution which is posted in this very thread, it numbers the differences it will have from the Block 60, trust me there are not many.
That the F-16IN is agile? Lol. Sorry again but you miss the point.
No you miss the point, rather than saying its less agile give me some proof, like Pilot testimony’s, comparitive data, DACT performance reports etc.
Sorry my friend I believe LM over you unless you can give proof.
does anyknow the status of Mi-46 development? its apparently competitng with Chinook and CH-53K for IAF Mi-26 replacements.
According to Shiv Aroor’s blog Mi 26 is also in the competiton not Mi 46. Oh and Boeing is lobbying hard.
