I don’t know if this is useful, but I read in the Aeroplane magazine that the Indian Air Force Ajeets (their developed Gnat) were fitted with MB seats instead of the Folland variety.

Don’t know why HAL did this, as the Folland seats were very good and much smaller and lighter than the MB ones. Perhaps they had supply problems, with Follands ‘dead’.

Maybe someone in India has an MB seat you could have. Try HAL?

I’ve had my holiday in Norway, and what a stunning place it is! I very much enjoyed every minute of the the Hurtigruten cruise (that’s pronounced “Hooti-rooti”).

Anyway, I ended up using SAS for all my flights – four off. They were very good and it was 737s all the way. -400, -600 and -800 models. Boy, do those smaller versions have some take-off power! I jokingly asked a pilot at the end of one flight if he had been a fighter pilot, as the take-off was a rocket-like zoom! He just smiled.

Incidentally, SAS baggage reclaim was the fastest I have ever seen on every flight. At Heathrow on my return, I visited the toilet and took the long walk to baggage reclaim and there was my bag on the carousel.

Some notes on Norwegian and Sterling: Sterling had no direct flights to Oslo, and Norwegian was extremely expensive. Being an old wrinkly, I didn’t manage to book my flight home from Bergen to the UK until the day (last Sunday) and Norwegian wanted over £300 for a single fare. The nice lady at SAS managed to get me a cheaper flight via Oslo.

    I hope SAS survives.

    Hi Bri,
I recently read your May 10th, 2006 post regarding your experience at Shoreham Airport in the mid 50’s. I too was cycling around the peri-track that day. The actual date was April 2nd, 1955.
    Cheers, Barry

Sorry for the delay in answering – I’ve been on holiday in Norway!

Interesting that you did the same as me in those days. But when I saw it, it was a nice day and the grass was dry. I think she made a few visits to F G Miles to swap details of their high-aspect wing.

Incidentally, I lived in the Lancing Broadway estate and went to school at Worthing Tech. Thanks for the aircraft ident and pictures. Don’t worry about the quality, the fact you have them is important enough.

Superb black and white photos Martti. I always feel that monochrome suits planes more than colour does.

One thing puzzles me about the pictures of hordes of cars, though. When I visited your beautiful country back in the 1960s, it seemed that hardly anyone there could afford a car!

    Ooops… smiley bypass!

I am a nasty person but in this case I was assuming that most of this forum would think of Dad’s Army. Sorry if I’ve caused offence. 😮

Thanks. But “Let’s be careful out there!”

    You stupid boy!

    Adrian

Are you a nasty person without a sense of humour, or are you just using the quote from Dad’s Army?

Must be the only time the Yanks were on our side!

I realised a few hours after I wrote the above that it was not really what I meant! I expected the Americans on this post to come down on me like a ton of bricks!

What I really meant was ‘Must be the only time the Yanks were on our side in this fashion.’

    Mea Culpa!

As long as you don’t ban a little gentle humour.

If the forum gets too politically-correct, I shall volunteer myself off it.

Slightly off post, I know, but when I was on a technical course with ex-USN instructors at HMS Collingwood, they told us that during the Falklands campaign, the USN crews on their carriers were glued to TV reports and were actually cheering the Limeys on to beat the **** out of the, er, enemy!

Don’t know much about the history of this type, so what did the navy use them for? And, tongue in cheek, did they ever land one on a carrier?

Various engines are on display, and some pix may be a good idea for this post. The museum is ‘old-style’, ie no computer games for the kids, but it is part of our heritage.

Something I missed out on my post was that I think some of the RR engines on display at Derby are aero engines. Could someone confirm that, and take some pics? I’m now ‘darn sarf’ so can’t do it myself.

It’s always been the same in the UK. You can get rain, snow, fog, wind and sunshine. And that’s just in the morning!

I know I’m too late for this post, but one museum you may have missed is the RR museum in Derby. Mainly for trains, true, but RR all the same.

And by the way, you can ‘sit in the cab’ of an Intercity 125 on a fast but very wet trip to London! It’s a projected film through the cab windows. Or it was a couple of years ago.

Check Ebay or Amazon for aircraft manuals. I bought a set of Concorde Maintenance Manuals on CD recently (I wrote some of them!).
