Sorry! You are right. He was PVO…..my bad. And I might add that although I have mixed feeling about his actions, that was a very impressive bit of flying getting that beast to Japan and down in one piece.
I’v read a couple books that have some dealings withe pilot training in the cold war era……..”From Tailhooker to Mud Mover” by Dick Lord has some pretty interesting pages on USN air combat training. “Mig Pilot” by John Barron has some interesting insights of Soviet pilot (VVS) training.
Were the 24s shot down by machine-gun fire or do we know? Ukraine DOES seem to be in a bind here. I cant imagine their Air Force is in any condition to really fight the Russians.
