By operating anything other than F-35B, they are bound to operate in the vicinity of the CBG, and so makes no particular sense in having USMC fighters

No sense? what did the Marines do up until the mid 80? Apparently the AV-8B+ has recently got AMRAAM, so what did they do until then?! VSTOL is not the end all of Marine aviation. If the “B” is canned, Marine tacair WILL go on.

If the Marines or Navy had wanted the Phibs to be able to operate independantly without Navy air cover, they would have made the AV-8B+ AMRAAM capable. But they didnt, did they?

You can believe what you want. Yet, the USN doesn’t agree with your accessment. Nor, does any other Naval Service that operates Aircraft Carriers.

As a matter of fact even back in WWII when most threats came from close range. Carriers did not operate close to shore. You don’t see pictures of Carrier operate anywhere near the Amphibious Forces. As they were far off……..

Sorry, people it’s been that way since the advent of Aircraft Carriers. (and for good reason)

You might want to go back and study history. right off the bat Spruance gave up a chance to completely smash the Japanese CV force (He did destroy their air groups-turkey Shoot) because he did not want to leave the beach heads uncovered. His one strike did sink a CV or 2 ( but it was subs that got the 2 big ones) but the IJN still had enough hulls left to continue with a threat.

The official RAF designation is ‘C-17A Globemaster III’

    TJ

Why is that? Shouldnt it be “Globemaster C.1”?

theres something “powerful” about riding in one of those great snorting beasts…….especialy when on gunnery……….but the feeling never lasts…….cause sooner or later, you throw track. And at the end of the day, you have to clean that metal monster!

12 are carried on a LHD. There’s room for more if you leave the aviation assets for the the Marines they are supposed to protect.

The UK decided it needed a carrier the size of CVF to conduct sustained combat operations. They didn’t built it for the royal marines. They wanted it to be able to fight a war against an enemy whose neighbors won’t let the RAF build an airbase next door.

CVF doesn’t carry 2000 Marines. The Marine fixed pilots would like a bunch of things. They are then reminded by the Marines on the ground that their mission is to work for them, not replicate the capabilities of the Navy.

    VERY good post! Completely agree.:)

Kinda started with the AV-8B+ which probably should have been AV-8D.

Allways like Merkava………..looks like the best tank to fight from a battle position. Resupplying ammo must be heaven compared to an M-1.
