Oh I agree! If the new House Reps are serious about cutting spending then the best course would be to ax the “A” and “B” and have everyone go with the “C”. Of course’ I’m an idiot who would like to see the F-22 put back into production but with some improvements……….say….possibly with the new skin material from the F-35…….call it the F22B……..nah…….too farfetched!

Any one have any idea what the cost difference is between the A and the C??? Its seems that the extra cost is only with the B varient due to the STOVL requirment and the liftfan as well as the money in R and D , testing plus the risk involved. The A and C seem to be just the same aircraft tailored for two different services with maximum commonality.

Lord knows what the costs are from day to day. Best guestimates at this time are in the 100+ mil per copy pricerange withe the “B” being the most expensive (and least capable) and the “A” being….”cheapest”.

The argument for the A&B get weaker all the time.

For the amount of money saved standardising all construction on the C for USAF and USN, and the fact that the USMC COULD do without the STOVL fighter requirement, the smart money is on 1 or 2 models being cut. only choices would be A&B.

I brought that up earlier and was laughed down. It hurt.:(

My opinion is that the Italian ship would be too small. A PdA would probably have been most cost effective. Cant see an “Essex” due to double manpower requirements over Mel. And I think all the available Essex class ships were pretty much worn out.

Curious. Do you have such access?

He is one of the posters that demand people provide names and sources for their arguments, and yet NEVER provides them for his.

I think 2011 will be the year of decision for the F-35 program. If the government is serious about cutting spending, then the “B” version is dead. Scooter and I will have to disagree on this.

    Yeah…

…I agree, had the same problem myself, I bought some new doors and hinges for my home a couple of months before christmas and horror of horrors, the hinges are starting to wear already…OMG! The horrooooor! *shrugs*

It’s supposed to be a top aircraft manufacturer…

I can see the maintenance of the F-35B being rather…Hmmm…Interesting and a bit pricey…

Just right for austere forward bases!

I cant see a 3 division MAF being that close to shore for a landing, or for very long- artillery being a good reason. The Marines would have a area heavily bombarded, then fly in at least 10 battalions and pusing them out fast for a 10×10 kilometer beach head minimum(probably 20×20), to give enough space to bring the LHDs etc in close for as short a time as possible(LCACs also reduce the amount of time in close!) you dont need F-35Bs to cover this- the LHA/D decks will already very busy with helo ops!

The USN doesnt have the same problem as the Royal Navy at San Carlos- A racetrack 50-100 kilometers, with fighters and Aegis equipped ships providing a VERY secure air defence perimeter. dont forget at full war capacity, a US CVN could have 6 VFA/VMFA squadrons. with 4-6 CVNs,(I believe every Marine division landing should be supported by 2 CVNs), a constant presence can be maintained over the FEBA, and still have fleet air defence. so with CVNs doing this job so well, were does the F-35B fit in.

I’m not saying it wont be bought. It probably will. should it? I dont know. I dont think the marines should only buy the B for sure- they really should have Cs as well to replace there current F/A-18s(because the B wont work with the CVNs- so who fills the 400 slot?), and the Bs for the Harrier replacement. but the chances are 60-40 in favour.

I’m mean, who REALLY knows what POLITICIANS will do:rolleyes:

3 Division landing?! Can ALL out amphibs combined lift 3 divisions? Thats getting Normandy size.
