D = Deltic. What an Engine…..

So, what was the H-3130?
One would assume an H config of 3130 Cu in. The H being formed by 2 banks of horizontally opposed cylinders with the cranks linked by gears. Napier Sabre? And a glorious Rolls Royce engine That was killed by the jet age…
I’m talking bo**ocks I think..

No doubt the series will be repeated on Wings. And repeated. And repeated…
More BD on Telly would be a good thing – he came over very well. I reckon he’s got the indefinable “Fred Dibnah” quality, if you see what I mean. That mix of communication, knowledge and enthusiasm. Well I know what I mean!!

more melvic zen…
tee hee! 🙂
anybody here read John Keegan’s alternative German strategy for defeating the Soviet Union? Attack via the Middle East, in through Syria, up through Iraq and Iran pushing northwards towards the Caucasus securing oilfields as they went…
Which with the UK out of the battle would have been a lot easier.

A little known fact (well to me anyway!) is that Bruce Dickinson, when he’s not touring with Maiden actually flies commercial jets. As a job. With an Airline.
How cool is that! That’s enthusiasm – he’s probably made enough money to have a nice little stable of exotic warbirds but would rather fly 757’s as a First Officer (although I don’t know if he has other aircraft as well).
Agreed DaveB – Good guy and jolly nice chap to boot! Not to mention an Olympic Class Fencing Champ as well in his younger days.

Iron Maiden once played at the Oval pub in Norwich as the “Nodding Donkeys” in 1992. Not a lot of people know that.
Carol Vorderman is a goddess and I won’t have anything said against her, even though she does do those terrible 1st plus adverts.
It must be my age.

My “realistic” dream car is (and always will be) a Lotus Esprit. Dunno why, it just hits the spot for me. Cramped, noisy, unreliable and expensive to run but I still want one. In Yellow. Turbo SE S4.
But then I’ve always liked Alfa Romeo’s as well, which sums me up really 🙂 I’ve owned 2 and they were nightmares but I’ll still have another!
My ultimate Dream Car changes weekly – currently it’s the DB9, last week it was the GT40 and next week it’ll be something different again….
JC
Got it, read it and need to read it again! It’s currently at the front of the “must read when I get a chance” pile at the front of the bookcase..
Congrats on the 1000th – I’m racing towards 500 now.

We (in the west) regularly underestimate the resillience and meatgrinder that was the Russian machine. Not nice.
I still feel that the incompetance of the Soviet leadership in the early part of the campaign alongside the defeat of GB would have led to the fall of Moscow and the possible removal of the Soviet leadership. I do however accept that the total defeat of the USSR would have been a near impossible undertaking – What were Germany’s aims though? Complete control or just taking the Western territories?

Spamcan:
Hmm, I would have said attacking the Soviet Union head on was their biggest mistake… only an idiot would open a second front without dealing with the first
And the reason he didn’t even come close to finishing “us” off was because of the switch from airfield bombing to the bombing of London – and that (if some accounts are to be believed) was due to Georing and Hitler’s pride being hurt by the bombing of Berlin.
With the RAF out of the way, an invasion would probably have been launched. The success of such a venture will never be known, but if successful (the defeat of Great Britain) it would have taken America out of the European theatre leaving Russia vulnerable to the full force of Germany’s military.
Again, it would be conjecture to decide on an outcome, but with England out the picture, North Africa would have been in Axis hands, and the Middle East as well? The Japanese would have had a free reign in the Far East (and one would assume that Hitler would have counselled Tojo against any Imperial ambitions towards US interests in the Pacific – at least in the short term).
So we have Russia fighting a war on 2 fronts with no support from a defeated Great Britain and a now (probably) neutral USA against 2 opponents with no other major conflicts to support. Considering the Germans almost took Moscow, would this have tipped the balance in their favour?
and now, back to the thread!
Not a chance 🙂 Thread diversion is my speciality – I’m aspiring to Melvism (or should that be Melvic Zen?) in the art of bending threads to my will.
Anyhow, James did say discuss… It’s all his fault

A bigger boy did it and ran away
I think EBay should give the poor fella something in return for all the advertising they’ve had off the back of this affair.
My suggestion? Drop the engines out and hack it into 4 chunks (nose to outer wing root, wings up to engine bays). Get it moved somewhere safe (and cheap). Survey what’s left with the assistance of the bigger groups and try to arrange parts swaps to repopulate the cockpit. Any other useful parts to go onto EBay or sold as souveniers. The rest to the scrappy.
Callous maybe, but at least he has a chance of recouping something.
My lost cause? A Triumph Dolomite 1850. Spent a fortune on a new engine and loads of other stuff and still only managed to do about 200 miles in 18 months due to constant reliability problems. So much so that I never sold the car I bought the Dolly to replace!

Normally a ratty old Black Escort Cabrio, but as that’s currently scroted my chariot is a 16 year old Mini. And jolly good fun it is too! We also have a 2 year old Focus as well, but her indoors uses that.

So why was it called the “Hun”?
Not a quiz, I just want to know!

I think we can argue all day about this.
The truth of the matter is, most accidents are caused by poor judgement on someone’s part(accepting that mechanical failure is in the most part exempt from that statement).
Inappropriate use of speed is poor judgement. So is following too close, drinking and driving, poor observation, not maintaining your vehicle, poor parking and a multitude of other sins. Slowing people down will only take away one factor out of many, but it is politically difficult to improve training and overall driving standards.
If I had my way, all drivers would be required to undertake a form of advanced training within five years of passing their (tougher) test and have to have a form of “MoT” on their driving licence every 3 years. This could be enforced via insurance renewals. The tests could carried out by suitably licenced examiners (ie driving instructors, not civil servants) – so every 3 years you would have to do a 1 hour driving standards test, after which you get a certificate that would be presented at every insurance renewal.
Simple – and watch the accident stats tumble.
Should be an MP me.

Next on the Manifesto – Chavs and Scrotes: Their potential as crash test dummies, live targets for military use, research into suicide bombing techniques and as a viable replacement for foxes in hunting.
Comet, the kittens are driving me mad! I can’t believe we’re going to breed them, it’ll be chaos..
Rest assured I will be posting lots of “aaaah how sweet” pics when the time comes – Later this year I guess.
