To me it seems one of the unexpected winners of the mig-23 family was the mig-23bn โ€“ outlasting the interceptor variants and the mig-27 family in service!! Given the maintenance and complexity of the latter type mig-27s…I suspect in hindsight the simpler 23BN may have actually struck the right balance: esp for third world air forces!

Looking at the mods done to it over the years, it seems self-defence was the most lacking of the type – with most nations incorporating chaff/flare mods at some point (guess the centreline dispenser requiring the pilot to jettison the central fuel tank didnโ€™t cut it…*surprise surprise* hehe)

Interestingly, Weapons-wise Chileโ€™s done pretty well exporting CB-500s intended for mig-23BNs to all of the last operators of the type โ€“ what this entails im not sure: Lack of availability of Russian munitions? Cost? or dissatisfaction with Russian ordinance? Or the ability to manufacture the type under licence in-country?

We know in soviet service the mach 2 capability was seen as unnecessary and was discarded with the mig-27 sans suffix…ive always wondered in the export air forces whether this capability was more utilised (e.g. to ****** off after a raid) seems very likely it found use with the Iraqis using 23bns as bait for the Iranians!

    regards

    other thing ive wondered:

given the total PITA the gsh-30-6 on the mig-27 was….im suprised they diddnt swap it out for the smaller 23mm rotary cannon of the su-24 or the twin 30mm of the su-25

    hiya

the taliban usually just painted out roundels, or diddnt use any according to witnesses on the ground.

this markings look more to me to be a slight variation of the Hezb-e-Wahadat faction:

later on you can see an Ethiopian F-5 firing rockets and two flying in formation with two Hunters. It would be interesting to know how they met those Hunters. Some exercise I guess.

    :O yea that is suprising!

if i had to guess Kenyan machines for some exercise?

    fcuk! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

thats made my month!!! been digging round for something like this on russian sights then WHAM ๐Ÿ˜€

this is brilliant because its validated my literary research that the 355th was native to bagram, and only went to shindand later in the conflict, additionaly that a squadron of su-17m2’s was attached in the early 1980s but were non-operational at the time (took a few years of training!)- another point this pic appears to validate!

all makes for one happy camper at my end ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks for the help ha27. Interesting pics Cy24driver1. The afghan Mig-17 are very good also. I think that these “Frescos” where photographed on the delivery date (17-08-1979). Note no serials on the nose.

    Regards from Spain.

indeed, a truely awesome find!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

not too sure about the delivery…initial deliverys of mig-17 occured in ’56 then again in 73′. there is evidence of a reorganising of the serial system of aircraft occuring at some time…and i suspect this might be during this time, in addition to the reapplying of the ‘red’ roundels…..

the airbase appears to be mazar-i-sharif, as the typography matches… so from my reccords were looking at the 393th Training Air Regiment (UAL)…based there in….1979 ๐Ÿ˜€

there should be three squadrons of MiG-17s based there.
