Ah Nigel Spurs place at North scarle,to a teenage enthusiast this was an amazing place, had a few pieces from there ,I remember phantom ejector seats, pylons with WTM stencilled on,a lovely yet BDRTdamaged Bucc panel with the 12 Sqn fox on it,flying clothing,I found a victors AEO seat XL189 possibly? But it would not fit in my dads Vauxhall nova saloon,I was intending to go back but then an healthy interest in the female gender took over . What an idiot!
Newark Is a great event,I will return one day.
( sorry slightly off topic I know)

I seem to recall , possibly from the osprey colour series A10,that they may be gun gas deflectors ,They were aerodynamically shaped to push the gun gases away from the engines , to avoid stalling, I think they may have been experimental only, apologies if I’m wrong it’s been a few years since I’ve seen that book !

Looks like a valiant seat to me,I used to own one, from WZ373,it was a mk3A,but that one in the photo is more complete than mine, that has got to be worth saving!

The vampire iirc is an ATC unit aircraft XD622 ,the phantom XV460 is no longer there, possibly with Everetts now,has never had anything to do with NEAM/NELSAM ,it’s just in a compound very close to the museums perimeter fence.

While it’s not a 231ocu machine, the only loss over the sea that I can find is WJ582 of the meteorological Reseach flight, which crashed in the sea on 21 feb ’62 off RAF leuchars, could it be that the crew member was ex 231,and his name/Sqn was in his helmet when found? The report can be found at aviation-safety.net/wiki base/Wiki.php?id=21099,hope this may be of interest,

Always amazed at the dedication and attention to detail that you boys and girls put in to those machines,in all weathers,I must visit Elvington again, hopefully before Christmas,I just love the atmosphere not to mention the lovely NAAFI!
I know you’ve probably had this question asked a million times ,but here goes, just how close is Lindy to airworthy condition?
I think the goat is an excellent addition to RAF Elvingtons team, best wishes to you all!

I found it to be very interesting, with some superb footage of the 3 V bombers.
The footage of the B17 that was shot down(the bit about the Lincoln over berlin) was extraordinary yet shocking,is it possible that any crew may have survived that?

So sad to see so much history destroyed, how many stories could be told if only those old warriors could speak, they must have been charged with human emotions, extraordinary acts of sacrifice, courage ,pain and elation, not to mention the fabulous nose art ,I fully understand the reasons for the mass scrappings, but seeing ‘five grand’ and the others like that, absolutely heartbreaking,I am sure that they will always live on in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts and historians alike, fabulous piece of film.

    Wattisham with the mighty phantom.
Upper Heyford with the aardvark and ravens.
Lets hope RAF Leeming never needs to join this list!
