Here we go again with the moto “quality versus quantity”. I think this is the point where USA has a problem to find the optimum point and decide to compromise both terms to have an acceptable product.
Focusing so much on “quality” you build something with so much cost that it is impossible to buy it in the required quantity. And if you buy it in fewer numbers you realise that you don’t have the quality that you desired in the beginning.
Practically, Commanche was a victim of such a behaviour and it seems that F-22 is under the same threat. Hopefully it seems that F-35 will not face the same problem.
Just think of this, if it was to concentrate so much on quality in a single machine why don’t you modify a C-5 in order to become absolutely stealthy, curry 100 A2A missiles, have an AWACS radar in the back and a J-STARS radar in the belly and also curry about 500 guided bombs, A2G missiles etc.
With such a machine you can eliminate a whole country in only one sortie. Right?
It’s a joke isn’t it? Probably they sould think again their approach to “quality (or efficiency or effectiveness) versus quantity”.
I really can’t understand why there are people who compare the commanche program with the Eurofighter, while it would be more wise to compare it with the Crusader program.
Now, as for Eurofighter I think the general idea for europeans and especially for germans and British is that their designs are “evolutionary” while americans – and to some extent french – designs are “revolutionary”.
Now just think a possible conflict Iraqi style with the Crusader being the major artilery system. What would be it’s useness and how would it affect the battle?
My opinion no practical use, difficult to deploy and no role for it. As Arthur cleverly said the commanche is a CAPABLE design with no role anymore.
I think that’s the truth and nothing more. As for replacement I agree that UAVs will take most of its proposed missions.
Ladies and Jentlemen
I present you…
the Global Hawk at Farnborough 2000
Puzzled choice…!
Definetely, the GLOBAL HAWK!!!
Just imagine tomorow’s kids who would like to be pilots when they ll grow up. They would choose to fly a recon, a bomber or a fighter UAV.
And apart from that pilots will stay in the front line till their late 50’s.
But apart from that Global Hawk is my choice. I can only see the future in this plane and many many more applications either for military or civil use.
It seems that Bombardier which promotes the Canadair CL-415 has a good order list so there is place for amphibians. The fact that they are used primeraly as fire fightings shows that probably thats the role that fits best to them.
Why don’t we ask the Greeks? They bought M2000-5 and F-16 block 52+. They should already have evaluated both types.
Any news from DACT with these types over Aegean?
It’s really sad to say so but it seems that this hypothetical Home Defence Air force would probably point to inside rather than outside.
So clearly it seems that there would be an effort to transfer police duties to army units and to promote police forces and home land intelligence. Therefore I expect more helicopters as well as aircrafts patrolling USA.
Obviously there is no need for armed forces to defend US home land. It never was. This threat is an illusion and unfortunately it is expressed the wrong way.
Hopefully things will remain different here in Europe.

And each element can send out an individual beam like a passive array(if you have the computer power), but they can also act as a syncronised single beam. An active array is a matrix of small passive arrays with own individual transceivers – kind of. Tracking 24 targets means really tracking them all at the same time, not letting the antenna play boogie-woogie. [/B]
Just to add here that the radar performs all those different tasks, like searching and tracking due to complex but efficient management of energy that is used by each tiny array.
It depends on the current production of the company. If a similar project is running and the time schedule is not so tight then they would sell it.
However even if the aircraft is not in the production line then there is another alternative. The primer company can give the drawings and as many components as possible to a small company to manufacture it. The final cost can very. However it would possible be a little more expensive than the machine made from the original production line.
From my experiance those things happen everyday. It isn’t necessary to happen to fighter jets but there are examples of other products, military equipment included.
German Defence cuts
Taken from BBC news:
” Orders safe
Mr Struck said the cuts were part of a reform aimed at shifting the German armed forces away from traditional territorial defence and towards better fulfilling increasing international demands for peacekeeping and conflict prevention.
Despite the cuts, Mr Struck insisted Germany would honour procurement contracts that had already been signed such as the orders for 180 Eurofighter combat aircraft, the Tiger combat helicopter and NH90 transport helicopter.
However, projects such as upgrading the Patriot missile defence systems and plans to buy a pilotless reconnaissance drone for the navy, will be scrapped.
Opposition defence expert Guenther Nolting of the Free Democratic Party said that even if Mr Struck’s plans were implemented, the “discrepancy between assignment, equipment and availability of financial funds” would continue to exist. “
Apart from EF good news are also for Tiger and NH-90. As a matter of fact I wouldn’t believe that NH-90 was in danger anyway.
As for EF the conclusion is that no country can be commited to a design for more than one or two decades. EF could be the interim solution to European UCAVs.
Worst crime is to see poor countries that need helicopters for humanitarioan tasks or civil protection tasks and spend some machines of their inventory for VIP duties.
Deino
would it be possible to post the drawing in a much greater size so that we can see some details written on it. I think we would understand more about that project.
Thanks!

My favorite…
You should spend some time talking about UAVs…
None in Bulgaria?
My girlfriend who is Bulgarian said that they really like “Goodys” as a fast food restaurant there. A new opponent?
Hoppefully I ll manage to go there and see next summer holidays.
