Come see us on Sunday if you can, XS904, the Q shed and a recreation [almost] of something not witnessed since Binbrook 1988:)
Victor, Camberra, Hunter and one Bucc all running once for us during the afternoon.
Hi Andy
just wondering did you get the genny running ok in the end…………it is def only air in the system
philip
Hey Phil, oh boy, what a game that was
We ran it only 2 weeks ago, just to make sure all was ok, ran a dream, power coming though, it was sweet, nice and quiet as well.
And the morning we want it, oh no, not a chance, ‘lets play them LPG boys up shall I’
oh how we laughed
To cut a long story short yes we got it running in the end and yes it was air in the system, but what a game, didnt really need it to be honest 😉
Ran like a charm after that, didnt shut it down till about 7pm when we left, spot on mate 🙂
That’s cracking 🙂
Without wishing to exactly thread hijack, but only just found this clip a few days ago…. 😎
I guess this was Keith H enjoying himself just before the end of Warton ops……
Yep thats Keith ‘supersonic’ Hartley 😉
Not sure which aircraft, 693, 904, 773 ?
Heres another lovely film from last night, I recon we just about got it perfect last night, just the right mix 😉

Only about six months away from you being able to have everything snug, well done.
Just a thought, are you on the location listings for Film/TV agencies? I can think of a few time travel dramas which would be far better with added Lightning!
I will go as far as to say, probably sooner than six months before its finished 🙂 and they and us are finally, after 21 years all snug 😉
Very good idea, I will see what the group think of that idea 😉
Thanks for the pics Consul and good luck with your do at ‘cov’ 🙂
Seems we have started a little trend 😀
I know it would be bordering impossible but wouldnt it be great if another shed could be raised for two of the taxiiable buccaneers!?
No Peter, not another Q shed, the Leuchars shed is to be gas axed and scrapped ‘quick sharp’ there’s no man power, money and time to save that one, the Binbrook one, well yeh, dont ask us to to it, someone else can have a go but………………..
A new building for them maybe one day, if the Bucc lads ever get to that stage, Im sure Plazz will be able to fill you in on their future plans, its down to David Walton, the local council and the Bucc lads intentions for the future of their aircraft, not for me or anyone to speculate.
Its taken us a staggering amount of time money and effort to do what we have done over the last 15 years, I really cant put it into words to be honest
But no more dismantling, moving and rebuilding of 1960’s Q sheds, it aint no garden shed belive me
Sorry
John, love your pics, superb 😉
Now that’s great news 😎
Oh go on….you know you want to 😀
Hope you got plans for adding a correct brick accomodation block etc to the shed next to replace the porta cabins 😉 bricklaying must be the only skills set you’re all lacking now in demonstrating :diablo:
I think Twilight run was a bit misleading as well…….more like ‘pitch darkness’ run would have been a more apt description :p but I thought that was very evocative, although sadly it was too dark for my camera to be able to get any photos.
Thanks, we have been really working hard on it and the areos of late 😉
Im not going any futher re disscussing rebuilding any more Q sheds thankyou, the Leuchars one is coming down fast and will be chopped, no time for digging uprights out and unbolting hundreds of tons of 1960’s steel work etc
Yeh sorry about the start up delay, cold batteries and duff cell on the aircraft battery sent everything into ‘slow mo’ 😮 it was fine only a few hours before, so a quick head scratch and plan B came into action, but you know what Im gonna say
‘Its a Lightning !’
The brick bungalow, yep, we have a long term plan to do it,got all the plans etc, but lets get the shed finished and consolidated, displays up around the walls, all the ground kit that Ive not been able to get home with me renovated so its all looks the part, give the aircraft a ton of TLC, sit back abit and take stock, get some more cash in the kitty, we will do it some day just need to take a breather, its been a bit mad for 15 years and the last 5 have been ‘supersonic’
🙂
Congratulations andy and to you all at the lpg.
Wish i could have been there to see it .Maybe next year hopefully.
Andy trying to get my hands on something for your q sheds but waiting to see what i can sort out as not easy.
Send me a pm and will explain.
Have spoke to hugh about it a while ago .
OK, PM sent, sounds interesting, assume you have seen our latest addition to one of our inners walls, a reproduction scale print of the old LTF ops room corridor wall Mural ? 😉
Great stuff guys well done to all involved, i could’nt make the run but fingers crossed i will be there next time to get my Linghtning fix:p
Whats the story with the doors? are we talking about the main doors…..did they have to come off again? All the best Matt;)
Matt, no the front doors are fine in fact they are perfect 😉
The back doors are the next hurdle, now we have the funding we can call in our doors contrators and get them renovated and up, We however have been offered the rear doors, hanging rails, lights, fittings, claxons, signage and personel doors from the Leuchars Q shed, which is due for demolision pretty much as I type this, when its all down, we are going up there with a lorry to get all we need.
This is a very kind offer from the station staff and we thank them very much;)
Our rear doors and rails from our shed are ok, but they have sat on the ground for nigh on 15 years, and the Leuchars ones have been vertical all that time and abit better
So once we have the doors on site we will kick off the back doors rehenaging work, 2-3 weeks should see it all done 😉
And before anyone asks, no we are not going to save and rebuild another Q shed ok, so no silly idea’s 😉
Matt your next Lightning ‘fix’ could well be next May at the CWJ’s open day, nothing set in stone yet, but watch this space
Lighty, no worries, it was a pleasure to meet and chat with you 😉
Sorry I couldnt spent more time chatting.
We now have enough in the pot to get those back doors on, I dont think however it will be before Xmas 😉
Thanks to everyone who came along and supported us, and a big thanks to the ‘lads’ Max and Rich 🙂
John I assume you got the nozzle cover home ok 😉
Just got in myself, head still spinning, John and 728 did us proud, all those hours and bleeding knuckles have payed off
Would love to see some piccies, I never get time to get the camera out
Will put together a Q shed update sooner or later
See you at the next one, probably May 2010;)
Any idea how much it’ll be to get in?
Thought £15 each was a bit steep at the May event.
Call the office on the phone number given, they will tell you
Running old jets, even though they are ground bound aint cheap
Where else are you gonna see live cold war jets for less
I am sorry for anything Ive said, there was no harm meant at all.
I shall delete all my previous posts, and keep away from the subject of Lightnings, even after 21 years in the ‘game’, 🙂
Sorry
We have been invited by 5 Sqd to pitch our stall next to her however
I’ve just had some fun browsing back through this thread which seems to seems to have become a little ‘lost’. So I thought I’d unearth it and cheat a little….
Here’s a panel I have ( fronted by yet another of those Corgi Lightnings – OK,OK : but I can’t afford a real one ! 😮 )
And here’s one in real life – on Lightning XS458…..
And my obvious question is – what is this duct for ?
( Note : I can’t tell you if your answer is right or not ! 😉 )
Easy one Martin, theres several of those ‘ram’ air ducts dotted around the back end, this one and its opposite ‘number’ are mainly used for No1 pipe cooling air they are purely used for forcing cooling air into the very hot jet pipe areas, 895 degrees C being the JPT limit, so its getting pretty hot back there, which is why when we do static reheat runs you will notice we always remove as many panels round the back as possible as theres no forward air speed to force air down there, it all gets very hot back there 😉
Cheers 🙂
Ritch, Max,
Best wishes from all of us in the LPG, hope your new ‘adventures’ bring you smiles, remember the Q shed is always open to you both 😉
cheers Andy, knew they had a “little” left, but didn’t trealise they were flown to the last hour!. yeah knew about 728’s stress panel, no big deal though, that could be re-skinned quite easily. did 904 get the 600hour mod to the wing then too? bummer, looks like all eyes are on 579 then, so before you all ask. NO NO NO, we are not even entertaining it!!!:D:D:D:D unless someone wants to donate about 20 million quid??? perhaps that spanish fella who won 111mill on the euro lottery might help:diablo:
Yeh 904 was extended out another 600 hours, but all used up.
We arent in the game of flying either of our two, never have been, just preservation, (and running them has always been a fine balance in the word of ‘preservation’)
Thats enough for a Saturday hobby on the personal/relationships/work/money ‘balance’ fronts.
And thats all this ever was and be for us, its fun, to put one back in the air it would end up being a nightmare, fun over.
Cheers Milt, carry one with your great work and keep updating us, see you soon ‘me old’ 😉
