Hi finch. shes not the only one. Xs458, XS925, Zf593 (though in the states now) XR724?, XS904? would all be candidates too.I think the last 2 have some FI left??
yes she could be potentially returned to flight. She would need millions spending on her for the UK so no chance over here, but, yes there is more than enough FI left on her, and another 3000 hours life remaining. we have only used ex saudi parts on her 1) because that is the F53 fit, and 2) because all of the Saudi stock we have, has paperwork and no more than 50% used life, hence all the components would be suitable for OEM overhaul in the uk. for instance the n01 jet pipe has 19 hours on it!
Though the engines are new, they would still have to be certified for uk use, and that is a problem in the UK, so yes SA or USA would be the sensible option. She has a few of correctable show stoppers at present. 1) both port and starboard stress panels ideally would need to be replaced, 2) port and starboard wing magnesium castings need replacing.3)small section starboard top wing skin has a similar issue that XH558 had, and would need to be fixed. All sortable though.
Count 904 out, Warton flew her to the last hour or so, nothing left of her FI, 728 is about the same, with abit more than 904, but not much, and has damage to her No1 engine bearer/wing panels, as you know
724 has nothing much left, which I why Warton retired her to Shawbury in 1990ish
925 was flown to the end of her FI
Not sure about 458, those last three T5’s that came out of Binbrook 452,328 and 458 had some time left, need someone to confirm how much though 😉
Cheers
How much do lightning cockpits go? Any 2-seat cockpits around?
Just XV328 at Brunty, doubt its for sale though, not a clue how much Nev would want for it.
The only F2a is the A1 one XN728, ummmm, thats a log shot, but if your pockets are very very deep, you have very good diplomatic skills and you dont mind ‘abit’ of corroision you might just do it.
Get over there and introduce yourself asap 😉
Getting owt milatry across europe by road, ummmm, again your paper work, diplomaitc skills and deep pockets are goona get used again 😉
Good luck 🙂
Yeh Milt do tell ;)
Nice one Milt, well done, see you soon 😉
It would have been cheaper to a restore a EE Lightning (under French or German registration) and fly it to the UK each Summer. After the type’s post-service safety record in South Africa, the CAA might even allow one to be flown with G-MARKings. Your not telling me that the EE Lightning is a more costly and complex aircraft to fly than the Vulcan?
Please lets not go there 😉
Forget it, seriously 😉
For me, this is one of the most outstanding preservation groups we have. Not satisfied with keeping their aircraft “live” and active, they have single-mindedly set about re-creating the whole atmosphere around an active Service aeroplane. This is something missing from virtually every other preserved aircraft set-up in this country, although the East Kirkby Lancaster comes close.
I raise a glass to the LPG – tremendously well done chaps, and long may you reign!
Steve, many thanks for that 😉
We do try hard to get it right, its been an interesting 21 years 😉
Most of all we enjoy what we do, we are in total control of what we do and we I think come across as a friendly bunch of chaps 😉
Its all about enjoying the hobby, and the rest comes easy (ish)
See you soon
🙂
As i was at brunty the other day i was given a copy of the poster advertising the open day however i’ve misplaced it. Has anyone on the forum got a link or scanned copy of the poster so i can print it our and post around the noticeboards at work (RAF Cottesmore ) and obviously for anyone else to print out and put up in their workplaces
Thanks in advance
Matt W
Matt, Im working on it for you 😉
Do you sell tickets in advance or on the day?
No theres no need for advance tickets this time, just pay on the gate, see you there 😉
What are the badges on XR753 and XR725 fin?
Olllie, 11sdq’s 2 eagles in differing forms 😉
i often mean to ask you andy.
do you guys ever dream about flying your birds again? is it something thats always at the back of your minds?
ben 🙂
Ben, simple answers ‘no’ and ‘never’, just to look after them get the shed finished which will act as a permanant museum for them, keep them running as long as is safely possible and to enjoy our hobby with as many other like minded people as possible 😉
Simple as that really, no stress or bother
Cheers
