Mike Beachy Head has asked me (and probably others) if there are any unofficial climb-to-height records for the Lightning. There are no official records as these would have to be world records and the current turbojet records are held by a Sukhoi P.24.

Most of you will know that he is attempting to break the 20,000 ft and 30,000 ft records using a stripped-down T.5 but could do with knowing what the unofficial UK records are. I think that the late Brian Carroll may well have held unofficial records but I have drawn a blank on discovering times.

    Anyone help?

Hi Dave, having qizzed Brian, Jimmy Dell and Peter Collins on a few occasions about this, (both Peter and Jimmy from AFDS days) they are all sure there was no offical climb to height record recorded for a Lightning.
Would love to be proved wrong on this and find out for certain.
They are all resonably unanimous that in a T5 Lightning from brakes off it would take 2.5 minute’s to reach 36,000ft, this was Brians ‘area’ as it were, he knew one hell of alot about the Lightning and its performance so I would be pretty certain this data were correct.
We all miss him either on the end of the phone answering questions like this or powering down Bruntingthorpes Runway in 904 or 728.

On another subject he did once tell us he managed 88,000ft out of Tengah in an F6

    Hope this helps

Hi chaps, have had a good look though our stores (lots of boxes) and come up with this kit of parts for you, only had enough bits to make up one unit,

You didnt say in the request what pressure you need on your accumulators, so I had a rumage and found this one
    Image hosted by Photobucket.com

We do have others if the pressure reading is to high for what you need, this particular one is for Lightning services pressure

Let me know if this is any good and we will take it from there, maybe a Q shed donation ??? 🙂

    Cheers.

Hi, we are up at the airfield tommorrow giving 728 a little stir, I know we have a box full of spare bits from Turner adaptors, I will make a point of digging all the bits out and see what I can come up with, will get back to you over the weekend or possibly Monday.

    Cheers

To all here’s the latest on XR753, I found this update on the UKAR site

    http://www.ukar.co.uk/board/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=9;t=8495;hl=xr753

Looks very shinny, but at least she’s going to be looked after at Conningsby
Not to sure on the time scales for dismatling, transport and reassembly

Here’s a shot I was sent this morning

    Good Thread, me old!

I flew the Lightning in service in 1983.

    Cheque is in the post…!

Thanks alot for your contribution 🙂

Do you have either 728 or 904 in your log book ?

What I didnt mention is that anyone donating £50 or more will have their name on a donators board on a wall in the hanger when its finished

    Please keep up the interest

Do you have a PayPal account, donations could be sent? To much logistics to write a cheque, get an envelope, stamp, post box etc. Sorry for being bone idle!

No sorry we dont have a Paypal account, its the old fashioned way at the moment, we are looking into it though

    Sorry

Just a thought, I expect most of us are at the age that when someone says ‘what do you want for xmas’ and you say apart from the unobtainable without a lottery win ! nothing really.
Why not ask them to make a donation on your behalf to a deserving cause such as this, or any aviation memorial fund, project that takes your fancy?
It will help a good cause and make the givers happy that they have given you something that you would appreciate?
    Alan.

Thanks for the comment Alan, 🙂
