Been in Norfolk for a few days.
The ‘Last of the Wapiti’s’ (photo 64)had a long history ,ending up with the Indian Air Force until 1939.
The markings under the wing may have been when it went from 84 to 55 Sqn (in Iraq)

I think that the photo in Chumpy’s post is a cropped version of your photo 61 and again leads me to think that many of these high quality pics are of ‘station photographer’ standard and your principle like myself used to obtain ‘gash’ copies from the squadron photogs. I have a number of F.95 shots of Harriers.

And the hatch. Presumably the drogues (targets) came from the box, and were dropped after use, on the airfield’s edge. The hatch allowing access to the cable to drop them. Not seen this set up myself, but later ones on Lysanders, Defiants Walrii and a Hawker Demon (RAAF).
The most familiar type of winch is the Type ‘B’ with the four blade propeller.
I have only seen on photo of the early type(on the Wapiti) and that was on a Wallace.

Some of it is knowing one has seen that aeroplane in ones own library. 🙂 I have a large run of the ACCA yearbooks. I also answered this one on Hyperscale. a few nights ago. I seldom look on the internet.
John 🙂
John, I am intrigued ! What can you see that makes it a taget tug ?
Keith.
The odd box underneath and rail device aft of it.
Photo 29 is K4110,
John
It’s a Kreider Reisner XC31

The Vincent in the background is the one which stood on it’s nose in photo 29.
Nice to see the gentleman who has given us so many puzzles to play with.
I just realised that the Wapiti in photo 1 is equiped as a target tug.

Is the script Burmese?

Vincent K4111 of 84 Sqn. This a/c was later struck of charge after it’s port u/c leg collapsed at Baiji. It had flown 985 hours.
K Files.

G-AILI was the Messenger 2a which had the Praga E engine fitted for a time, and I believe that very engine is the one sectioned and on display at Newark. Tommy Shipsides Messenger, I mentioned earlier, was G-AJFC.

Probably the best scale drawings of the Defiant are the ones published in Scale Models.
I have them, if you can’t access them. Have you tried the BP heritage museum?
John
So there is a good chance that the TIII in the group photo is RR306
John

John,
Dont wait for the museum to be open again – if you want to come down while we are closed, just let me know – it may be easier to get the dimensions you want anyway!
All the best
Bruce
Thanks Bruce, I’ll contact you at some point when I can get down.
Regards
John
The Gemini is Kilo Hotel and it could have been in 59. I was spotting at Tollerton from about 56 to 59 to when I put on the Blue uniform.
