In 2004, the Rafale unit price was €46.8M for a single seater (50.1 for the twinseater)
    http://www.senat.fr/rap/a04-077-7/a04-077-74.html

The 3.1Md € figure for the 59 Rafale includes :
    1.6Md for Dassault (59 airframe)
    0.6Md for Snecma (138 engines)

Rafale F1 had no MDPU. OK.

Rafale F2 introduces the MDPU (two computers made of 18 LRU). But i’m not sure these are based on COTS.

Rafale F3-O (from the 59 Rafale batch) (read O as “obsolescence”) introduces COTS (PowerPC) for sure.

While Rafale F1 will need a serious upgrade (if ever accomplished), Rafale F2 will remain the same as future hardware are 100% compatible. The software are exactly the same in F3-O and F2 retrofitted in F3.

Guys on SP know nothing about Rafale. They are extremely biased. I don’t care about the fact they may qualified to talk about Super Hornet or any other US types. When they talk about Rafale, they OFTEN commit big mistakes demonstrating they have no access to up-to-date documents (no access, or no interest at all), though they claim they’ve talked to French pilot or to their dog.
This results on extreme prejudice each time (“Dassault are liars”, “Rafale is ********d up design” etc).
Of course, there are some good guys there, who can keep polite, nice and couteous, and they do not deserve the trolls. French on SP may be over optimistic and annoying, they are quite courtuous.

Strategypage contains some very interesting info on the Rafale, BTW…

It depends on who you trust.
There are over-optimistic Rafale fanboys, there are those who can back up their claims with many public documents, and those who claim “I know because i’m a professional” and who use their “knowledge” (what a joke) to criticize french tech, re-write history and justify their “troll-istic” attitude.

By the way, since you read SP, you may want to accept the 0,1m² value for the Rafale RCS too.

    😀

Aspis > The OSF-NG is a future upgrade, not funded yet, but with TV, IRST and LRF.

For 2012, it will be the OSF-IT with only the TV, and, i think, the LRF (included in the TV channel).

The AESA do not steal the OSF’s room.:D

BTW TMor I found your website on the net, and I think you should translate it to english for the benefit of the forum. It’s full of very informative facts about the Rafale; many I’d never seen before.

    Nick,…

    How useful…

    – I am sorry TMor, you are right.

    No need to apologize.;)

I think it’s okay to bring the Typhoon or Gripen for comparison purposes, and even get a bit carried away about their systems as long as it’s not a jackonicko-fonk like drivel.

    Nic

Sometimes (if not always) the difference is just too subtle. Ideally, (known) capabilities say enough (if not all), and this alone already allows to fill an informative/interesting thread.

In addition, we all know how dangerous it is to compare Typhoon and Rafale…

I second that. The Rafale was supposed to get LOAL capability for the MICA too, correct?

    Only with F3 standard (now).

1- This is a Rafale thread.

2- In regards to the 1st point, JOUST deserve another topic (a JOUST topic).

3- According to the 1st point, Typhoon has nothing to do here, or only VERY punctually, with people keeping in mind that flame wars tend to start with comparison (Aspis and Swerve : talk about the towed decoy elsewhere please).

4- I would appreciate that GlobalPress received a warning from moderators, not only for what he did on this thread, but also for what he tried on the Typhoon thread.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

It’s around 2018 for France. 2013 if UAE signs the contract soon enough (France has already agreed to pay for the integration).

GlobalPress : I thought there was nothing more to add about JOUST (already being off-topic). Do not ignite another flame war.

What do you think about the mister Hoyle’s article, instead ?

Irbis-E is an AESA. Not a PESA.
AESA suffers much less in terms of range.
