Acsension isnt very close to the Falklands, it is north of Tropic of Capricorn! I thought there were Phantoms there….

remarkable airplane for it’s time, had the first heads up system, and was a truly, great aircraft to the crew. Unfortunely the linear bomb bay was a dismal failure, and its time in the fleet was short lived.

I dont think it had the first HUD… I remember rading it was something else… I’ll go through the book i was reading.

Being a PhD student in Strategic Studies myself, I find Malcolm’s use of his “education” inexcusable and holier then thou crap. Education is not an end all, I have been humbled by many junior NCO’s and embarrased many senior officers in my work with the military. I have never once used my education as an excuse to be harsh, rude or whatever. If you find the discussion repugnant do not partake in it. As for historical “rewriting” or “what ifs” in history, you are obviouslynot well versed in military historiography as this can be a valuable tool.

BTW a quick search of your name produces no published work….

Mig 15 first flight dec 1947 and was in front line service before F86 first flight
22 Dec 1949. That’s at least 2 years by my maths.

    really? 😮

MiG-15 was not in service until 1949, though prototypes flew as early as 1947.
F-86 prototypes flew shortly after the war and was in service by 1949.

In fact I would argue the exact reverse of what you just said. The F-86 was in works for longer then the MiG-15. Seems your math is a bit flawed…

Besides a “first flight” does NOT mean operational service. Otherwise the F-22 would be been in service since 1997 and JSF already!

The pace of aircraft developement in the late forties and fifties was so fast, that in reality, they were from different eras. The F86 was superior because it was newer.

The F-86 was no “newer” then the MiG-15….both from the 1948 time period.

No royalites, was a gift from the Crown, alleged won over a game of snooker. However there was problems with ID the some alloys used. The KGB organized a tour of the factory and, with an agent wearing extremly soft soled shoes, ground the excess shaving from near the lathe utitiling the unIDable alloy. Hence they could more easily ID it.

Huge advantage for F-86 was hydraulic controls meaning it could go from on manuvear to another faster and with less fatigue.
Advantage in armament went to the Mig-15 with its cannon. The .50 was horribly ineffective with regard to destroying a MiG-15.
Training wise, one must be careful as too who you are comparing. The Soviets, Chinese or NK’s. With regard to the latter two, yes our pilots were better trained. Against many Soviet pilots who flew in the Great Patriotic War training and experince was very simialar. Lots of new evidence of this is now coming to light.
