I recall driving from Sheffield where I was working to the Derwent Dam to see PA474 and a Hastings do several passes over the dam. Plus there may have been a Tornado or 2 but it was PA474 and the Hastings that have remained in my memory.
I left Sheffield in 1990.well before the 50th anniversary. Was there a 40th anniversary flight in March 1983?
If I remember correctly, it was claimed in the local paper that the particular Hastings was little older than PA474
 IIRC the last 4 RAF Hastings aircraft came out of service at RAF Scampton in 1977 โ did any unit operate one in a trials mode after this time?
Congratulations! ๐
As a prelude to the 30th Anniversary celebrations on 7th February, a small album of Vulcan delivery photographs for XM594 landing at Winthorpe in 1983 has been uploaded in here!
From looking at the forecast the weather looks like repeating itself with the conditions seeming set to mirror those encountered in 1983!
An update on the museum website indicates that all of the booking confirmations for the Vulcan cockpit visits on 7th February have been sent out.
Remember that there are now two other Vulcan cockpit open days on 22nd & 28th February 2013.
A great (albeit very cold) day over at Newark showing a group of Scouts around the museum; they were doing their Air Activity badge โ hopefully they are another small group of youngsters who may now have a greater interest in aviation! One young person even chose to be invested into the pack in a short ceremony in the main passenger cabin of the Wessex helicopter!! ๐
Yesterday the concrete floor of the new Object Storage building was cast; some good progress has been made on the Harvard wing joint area, with all of the damaged material having now been removed.
I have managed to get some photographs of these projects and a couple of the other over-winter projects added to the various albums in this part of the NAM website.
Why not get out from behind your computer screens, stop reading all the cr*p and come and look at some real aeroplanes, cars, motorbikes??
The Shuttleworth Collection is open all the year round–always something to see.
In fact, a Winter’s week day is the best time just to look & study.
come on a Tuesday or a Thursday and I might even show you around.
Price for tour = Tea afterwards.
A.
IMHO that’s one of the best ideas on here so far this year! ๐
Other locations available and I’m just off to one now! ๐
The free Vulcan access event has now been fully booked for Thursday 7th February; please see here for details.
There are also details about some extra Vulcan cockpit days that have been added later in the month on 22nd & 28th February 2013.
A few more website thoughts!
One challenge that a lot of websites face is how to meet the needs of the visually impaired in an appropriate way (changeable font sizes etc.), whilst also meeting the requirements of people accessing website via portable / handheld devices (phones, tablets etc.)!
This challenge has a cost implication as does, trying to introduce fully searchable functionality into a website at a late stage in its development. However does search engine technology (G****e etc.) make this so important?
To make websites easier to update should you be looking to use CMS (content management system) software for the whole site? The flip side to this is the possibility of a slightly more rigid / standardised design format.
It may be worthwhile noting that some UK museum websites may also be developing a more โsamey-feelโ due to the requirements of them trying to meet the requirements of VAQAS / Accreditation.
Finally for now, websites can also benefit from โbolt-onโ links like this one to Empedia โ and yes before anyone comments NAM is aware that the external Audio link is broken on its website โ sorry!
To be honest even I would have drawn the line before that! ๐ฎ
(I must be getting old!)
However, thank you for the kind comments, which I will pass to those involved with the NAM site, which is overdue for an upgrade!
It is a difficult balance to get the right amount of detail; IMHO you need just enough information to encourage them to visit, but not too much so that they can do the visit from the comfort of the PC!
I had a similar discussion yesterday whilst looking at how Newark will benefit from the AHL/ACE funded education project โ and again the right balance was agreed to be the key aspect of what is eventually provided. ๐
Hearing a few whispers that WOS is drafting the participation forms as I type โ so Cockpiteers please expect to be receiving details in the not too distant future!
Donโ forget that Newark has an Indoor Aeroboot / Aerojumble before then!! ๐
Interesting to read about Bettyโs on here โ especially in the light of an Object of the Week item on NAMโs news page โ a wartime cartoon featuring Betty’s Oakroom in York! ๐
j w re #29 – Harvard cockpit KF532
I spoke to the curator today โ he wasnโt able to find any details on the cockpit and had been advised that it didnโt carry one โ apologies for no response to your email! ๐ฎ
However after a little bit of investigation on the cockpit framework I was able to locate and photograph the corroded plate, which has he following information on it:
Noorduyn Aviation Ltd, Montreal, Canada
Model: AT-16
Contract No: WSL 72-253
Serial No: LLA-2232 or (14A-2232)
Date Completed: 9-26-44 or (9-25-44)
Visually the serial / c/n to me seems to be LLA-2232; however looking at the photos I have my doubts, hence the details in the brackets above. Also not 100% certain on contract no.
If you PM me your email address Iโll happily send over the photos that I took so you can have a look for yourself โ apologies if these seem to be wrong and further advice would be appreciated. ๐
I forgot to add โ I noticed one of the Harvard wings was out today; allowing measurements to be taken for the work on the fuselage wing joint area!
An off-board review with j w leads us to believe the c/n to be 14A-2232.
Some photos of a Shackleton โcutโ at the transport joints in album Site 1A โ 1977 here! ๐
Don’t look Rich!!
Sounds like itโs coming together nicely over there โ best wishes for a great event! ๐
j w โ Iโm not sure that the lack of response is down to the same issues! However Iโm due to be at Newark tomorrow and Iโll endeavour to locate a c/n or i.d. on the framework of the Harvard cockpit KF532.
C R โ keep up the good โinspectionโ work and make those QA people proud! ๐
