I totally agree – the local and regional coverage should be protected – it is hardly a major expense. In fact I am in the middle of an ongoing argument with the BBC about cuts to local radio.

Last year as about now, I was setting up some media coverage for a major aviation event in this part of the world for a major Canadian broadcaster that had a bureau and news team in London. As soon as they knew that the BBC was also covering the event, they didn’t even leave the capital they just syndicated the coverage because they knew that it would fully meet their needs. Actions speak louder than words in my book.

I’m glad that we agree on the regional coverage- although you’d be wrong to think that it was not a major expense!

As for freeloading off your wife’s age you should be ashamed of yourself!! 😀

Well, perhaps you have not watched/read much from overseas news providers. The BBC’s is only one view of the world – there are others.

In any case I think you missed my point. I said that from a broken up BBC “I would be more than happy to pay for reputable and reliable news and good drama and documentary for a fraction of what the BBC currently costs us.”

Charlie, rest assured that I have a broad knowledge of a range of broadcast media across the world; but it’s not just the ‘international’ aspects that the BBC prides itself on – it’s local and regional coverage is second to none and that gives people the opportunity to become engaged. Break it up and you risk losing this.

Look on the bright side if the BBC is still around and funded by a license fee; in about 7 years yours should become free! 😀

You only have to look at things like targeted adds etc. to see what you’ll eventually get; only what they want you to see and all for the highest price or bid!! …. and that comment comes from someone involved in PR & marketing for a living!

Be careful what you wish for in breaking up the BBC or indeed getting rid of it!

Yes it has got things wrong, everyone does!

However ponder this thought, what other news organisation would be providing the depth of coverage about itself and its problems, in such a time of immense uncertainty?

I venture to suggest none!

Cherish what you have before it gets squandered away to some foreign corporation!

Charitable rate relief is discretionary and something that you have to apply for, if you’re lucky you can get 100% relief but it does vary from council to council.

Don’t get caught out by the recent Business Rate Revaluation process – it can provide a nasty shock. Also empty premises don’t now qualify for ‘no-business rates’ – after an initial period of grace a fee becomes due on empty commercial property; that’s why a lot of empty buildings are being knocked down. 🙁

I’ve really managed to get meaningful engagement with Polish and Romany young people – so much so with one group four ‘remote’ Polish boys became active participants by translating the Polish markings found on a couple of the museum exhibits – issues of non-engagement only happen when you let them!!

And also Kev, as I have recently stated twice recently,
my 16yrs old Grandsons last school, has put History on the back burner.
