My late father was evacuated from Sheffield to Balderton, Notts in September 1939; and I grew up with his childhood stories of the comings and goings at RAF Balderton. This included the various bomber squadrons (including a Canadian Squadron); the dispersed Whittle Jet (or as he once described it – “a little aeroplane that made a funny screaming noise and didn’t have any propellers”); and the American Airborne Forces and their Carrier Groups.

In part these stories were what encouraged my early interest in aviation. Those evacuee stories now live on through the World War II education activities I sometimes deliver to school groups that visit Newark Air Museum.

Interestingly, most of my enthusiasm for audioguides and the value of the diorama as an immersive experience comes from several visits to the recently-completed SS Great Britain project in Bristol, which won nearly £9 million from the HLF for a difficult and demanding preservation job which, in my opinion combined hi-tec modern engineering and more traditional museum display approach superbly without feeling the need to create a “landmark” of any kind beyond what was already there.

Next time you’re tempted to photograph aircraft in NAM’s ‘HLF funded shed’ – I might give you some feedback on that project! 😉

… But the FA seem to have come away without much censure yet in reality should shoulder a fair bit of responsibility for their ground choice against the wishes and advice of others, plus whoever allocated the poorest end of the ground as far as accessibility is concerned, to the largest group of supporters should do some soul searching. …….

During my quest to find my ‘assailant’ I seem to recall comment being made that the stadium allocations were based on the likely access and egress routes to the city by the respective supporters; and the inevitable need to try to keep the fans apart. Whether that is true or not I don’t know – but yet another factor that contributed to the terrible outcome.
