A Lincoln (RE418) is ‘covered’ here! 😀
That nice, we did not get one for the F4F!!!
I now have a token – but as yet I don’t have a postal address for you; if you forward over details I’ll send through the token! 🙂
Aircraft access at Newark Air Museum
Chris the museum still provides ad hoc cockpit opening on the same additional fee basis as is briefly explained here!
Currently we’re more reliant on a wider range of volunteers to open aircraft than we were in the past. We used to have several families involved in opening the Vulcan, Shackleton and Hasting but sadly bereavements and changes of circumstance have altered the previous arrangements on these aircraft. That said we now sometimes have a wider range of airframes open Varsity, Canberra B(I)8, Canberra T19, Wessex, Jaguar cockpit, Phantom SIM cockpit etc; with others also viewable MiG-27, Viggen, Buccaneer etc.
The summer months are generally a good time to get access as the volunteers generously give up their time to allow access during the school summer holidays. However because we rely on volunteers it’s always good to check availability in advance or look out for the special days that are always highlighted with a listing in here!
…. Why on earth have Newark and O.Warden taken trouble to care for Prentices? ….
Back in 1967 when the Prentice flew into Winthorpe I believe the main reason it was saved was because it had served locally at RAF Cranwell – that training lineage is still relevant to the museum’s current Collecting Policy; not sure about OW’s reasoning!
Johnny K – as for building cost; perhaps not as much as you might think circa £2 to £3 million might suffice; plus space to get a few other things inside as well. However as you identified Planning Permission might be an issue at the current location.
Given more time back in 1977; perhaps Newark might have been facing difficult decisions 😮 with regard to XL149 see – third album in this gallery!
Yes indeed it is poignant – for me the local area telephone numbers on the original cover really brings things home:
Head Office & Works:- Failsworth 2020
Aerodrome & Final Assembly Plant:- Bramhall 1620
Repair Organisation
Bracebridge Heath:- Lincoln 8744
Langar Aerodrome:- Harby 272
Some post World War II images have recently come into the Museum Archive that were taken at Langar during the Canadian and Avro servicing period; I’ll have to see whether these can be used as an album on the website!
Sorry, faulty memory (is that both bits or just one?). I’ll have to try to stick to V-bombers.
Sven
The fuselage section at Newark is from a IX(B) Squadron Lancaster W4964 WS-J and was donated to Newark in 1974 and arrived by lorry early one Sunday morning – I helped unload it!!
A small piece of AVRO heritage is featured in this week’s Object of the Week on the NAM website!
Still willing to send out printed copies or PDF versions of this booklet that details Nottinghamshire’s aviation heritage and memorial sites! 🙂
Southfield development update
A brief update has gone live today about the planning situation for some of the developments on the Southfield Site.
Nice captures Ben – next time you’re over at Newark you’ll have to look in the cockpit of XB261! 😀
Different time zone – I saw a ‘tweet’ to say it had landed at EK on Friday pm! 🙂
At a guess these people http://www.catalina.org.uk/ going to East Kirkby for the air display! 🙂
In view of comments elsewhere about ‘aviation sales’ taking place at museums; I thought that it might be opportune to remind everyone that Newark’s Aeroboot in October still has tables available! 😀
Also I understand that later today there may be some new photos around of the NF14 with one wing section partially refitted!! 🙂
Just spotted the Meteor NF14 photos in this gallery!
Thanks for comments and glad that you enjoyed your visit.
I was there first thing and most ‘book points’ had Notts guides in them, perhaps they were taken during the day (around 200 visitors yesterday! :))
If you PM me a postal address I’ll send a booklet off to you – that’s our part of the deal with the County Council!
I’m now just off to deliver another supply to a book shop in Lowdham, Notts. 🙂
Sorry about the A46 – will be worth it when finished!
I understand that before the gates were opened this morning to the ‘seething masses’ that the Meteor NF14 was moved down the site to a position in front of Hangar 1 and is now being prepped for refitting the outer wing sections! 🙂
