I hate to say this, but having a museum within a station you are always going to be at the whim of the landowner, ie the MoD, and its latest ideas and whims.
The “whim of the landowner” phrase can apply to any tenant organisation, not just MoD related sites. 🙁
I hope that the Boscombe Down group is able to resolve its problems!
Thanks for providing that background Jon. A little bit of additional information about what is a significant airframe in the V-STOL story locally (Nottinghamshire) and nationally is explained in this short extract from an article I did on the project:
“Following on from the flight trials film footage from the Museum Archive also shows VZ608 being used to assess ground erosion and foreign object ingestion. This involved ground running the aircraft over a variety of loose materials, whilst the effect of the jet efflux from the RB.108 was filmed, monitored and recorded. The RB108 subsequently proved itself and VZ608 was eventually transferred to the fire dump at Hucknall.”
Other than the ‘coal scuttle’ intake configuration carried by VZ608, other different scoop fittings/ configurations are displayed alongside the aircraft and the RB.108 engine. 🙂
Some interesting comments coming in! 🙂
It’s worthwhile noting that the ‘Dexion-style’ structural repairs’ in the nose area were in situ before the fuselage came to Newark.
This morning I’ve received a reminder from NKDC for anyone who’s planning to attend the – “Cold Across The County” talk and base visit to RAF Waddington on November 26th.
You will need to pre-book this event ASAP because anyone attending will require security clearance in advance, from RAF Waddington. 🙂
Thanks for posting them Keith – I had to tweak the cockpit shot to try and get some detail visible. I’m glad they’re of interest!! 🙂
Anyone going to any of the North Kesteven talks / events?
Sadly the Ashton fuselage is pretty much a gutted shell and has been talked about on here before http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=94538&highlight=Ashton
I did arrange internal access for a forumite – IIRC last year sometime, but I don’t think that any pictures were posted.
I also took pictures but I have no means of posting them, I can email them through if you want to PM me an email address.
If you look at Keith’s picture you can see the start of the framework that is being fabricated to get the Ashton fuselage ‘mobile!’
I’m not sure Keith but I’ll make some enquiries! 🙂
2011 Aeroboot – 12th March 2011
Booking forms for the March 12th Aeroboot were given out to stallholders last weekend to give them the opportunity to re-book a stall in advance of forms being sent out to the general Newark Aeroboot mailing list. This mailing will be carried out on Wednesday 17th November so previous participants should return their forms in the next couple of days if they wish to retain their ‘booking advantage’. 🙂
Traffic alert – 13 & 14 November
A traffic alert has just been added to the museum website for anyone thinking of visiting the museum this weekend!
IIRC it was partially privatised  – a little bit of background detail is contained in this news item.
Not sure about any Spitfires! 🙂
…Pah! I’ll have no truck with Twin Otter’s (Howard) cosying up to stallholders as he did at Newark by serving the stallholders tea and coffee. Whatever next! They will come to expect it…
The first time we did an Indoor event at Newark it was so cold the stallholders needed hot drinks to stave off hypothermia – since then it’s become a ‘tradition’!
Last Saturday I paid for them as well!! 🙂
As for unloading – we provide 2 ‘transport devices’. 😀
Scott let me try and clarify the situation for you.
My post was responding to Keith’s post #37.
On Saturday 6th November the Harvard was then the most recent new arrival at Newark, albeit arrived there in August 2010 (before your visit).
On Sunday 7th November the Canberra PR7 cockpit WH779, arrived and therefore became the most recent new arrival at Newark.
Glad it’s worked out and nice to have you at Winthorpe! 🙂
Firstly as ever thanks for all the “Instant” Replies- Twin Otter thanks for that offer- was that the Trainer that used to be at Wattisham?
Yes it was – I have some black and white photographs of it being off loaded after it was saved from the scrap man by a quirk of VAT back in the early 1990s!! 😉
