Ben,
You’ve raised an interesting question and as someone who is involved with organising smaller scale events, I believe that it’s important that organisers should listen to and try to respond to their ‘audience’.
Like several people about these parts I have tried to canvas views in relation to several ‘audience development’ projects for Newark – with varying degrees of success. Indeed you’ll struggle to get any funding these days without having undertaken such consultation work.
As part of this approach I’ve noticed an interesting trend within the ‘enthusiast’ sector.
That is, enthusiasts normally tend to be very free with their views, expect when they are asked specific questions – then they can often go quiet. That’s not highlighting anyone in particular and doesn’t always hold true; but it’s an anecdotal aside that I have become aware of in the last year or so.
Conversely, the general public or ‘ordinary visitors’ are much more forthcoming when asked specific questions and really seem to want to contribute.
P.S. I’ve responded to your question to disprove my theory! 😀
Phone problems
The museum telephone (01636 707170) is currently out of order, sorry for any inconvenience this may cause! 🙁
Their fate has been well documented in the ‘Growler’ – IIRC they have been moved from near the terminal to another part of the airfield; they certainly weren’t in their original location when I visited Phaphos in summer 2008.
What was really nice on that trip was the base visit to the ‘real Shack location’ on Cyprus – RAF Akrotiri!! 😀
Not sure whether this might help provide a 44 Sqn connection and perhaps how the aircraft got into a training role.
RAF Winthorpe’s 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit [HCU] was formed as part of 5 Group by Sqn Ldr J Nettleton VC.
1661 HCU took over 9, 44 and 49 Squadron bomber conversion flights with the task of converting 5 Group’s OTU crews onto flying Manchesters & Lancasters, ready for Ops.
29 December 1942 – A & B flights at Waddington and C flight at Scampton all noted “as being ready for transfer to RAF Winthorpe”
I would love to see a Shackleton flying but as posted on one of the other threads I believe the fund raising implications would be too much of a challenge, along with the spares situation.
I appreciate that you have a huge spares holding but from my own personal dealings with the project I am also aware of ‘critical’ missing items. 🙁
But as I’ve also said before, good luck! 🙂
Cockpit-Fest 2010
I thought I’d seen you on one of the lists – details will be coming soon!
Glad your Gazelle pictures came through OK.
Seem to have gone a bit off track?
Roger Smith
Come on Roger it’s a web forum what do you expect. 😉
IMHO Newark still offers one of (if not) the broadest displays of RAF training types in a UK museum. In alphabetical order, with items in brackets perhaps not wholly falling into the original criteria:
Avro Anson C.19
de Havilland Canada Chipmunk T.10
de Havilland Tiger Moth
de Havilland Vampire T.11
[English Electric Canberra T.19]
[English Electric Lightning T.5]
[Gloster Meteor NF(T).14]
Gloster Meteor T.7
[Handley Page Hastings T.5]
Handley Page Jetstream
HS Gnat T.1
Hunting Jet Provost T.3 (cockpit)
Hunting Jet Provost T.3A
North American Harvard (cockpit)
Percival Prentice
Percival Provost
Scottish Aviation Bulldog T.1
Slingsby Cadet TX.1 glider
Vickers Varsity
IIRC it’s a mock-up BAPC 240.
Cockpit-Fest 2010
I understand that the first sets of information have been sent out re participation at Cockpit-Fest 2010 – I hope that I’m not going to need the ‘tin-hat’ too often!! 🙂
Pleased to have been of some assistance!
Just my personal response to what seems to be a return to ‘bizarre market situation’ where you can buy from some traders at a cheaper price than you can wholesale from the manufacturer!
😮 Sorry to have detracted from your excellent collection Tony!
…Not badly priced that (considering the RRP – surely, no-one buys direct from Corgi do they?!)…
Obviously not .. that’s why the market’s gone flat!! 😡
Does this help in any way?
As Bruce says make sure you do your asbestos RA.
Nice display Tony and there’s me thinking you would buy the die-cast from the Museum Shop at Cockpit-Fest! 😀
They still have a few of them in stock! 😉
