I don’t think there are any plans to restore the section at the present time and if there were, the permission would have to come from the Thomas Philips Trust I should imagine.
I’ve only seen it when we collected it, but it did look like someone has already repainted the American star on one side of the section at some stage, as the other side is very faded.
We do have a member in the Group who works at Duxford and he is trying to do a bit of research on what happened to the rest of the aircraft.

Chris.
“You need to speak to Bill” he said “lock up your bike and jump on”. He drove me across the airfield to meet Bill Gent and I was welcomed into the group.

Through a member of our historical group (Boxted Airfield Historical Group) we were lucky enough to be allowed to go along and see what we could purchase from Bill Gents collection after he died. This was a few years ago now. This was kept near Wickford and it was housed in three non descript wooden buildings. It was like an Aladins cave and we came away with some interesting bits and pieces for our museum in Colchester.
Later on I went back and collected for myself a quantity of literature including newspapers and ‘Picture Post’ magazines. He had some rare items in there – some quite valuable I might add. The bulk of his collection – I think it was owned by two people actually – I have a newspaper clippping about them somewhere) – went to one buyer. There was a substantial collection of genuine uniforms and helmets for example, and even a fairly large replica of a V1. Then he had things like a genuine road sign to ‘Peenmunde’ and what was in there was just unbelievable. I think he and his wife had done a lot of travelling and collected things as they went around Europe.
Yes, it has come from Earls Colne, left in the container shown in my pics for donkeys years apparently. I only visited the Rebel museum once when I moved to Colchester just before it sadly closed, and I remember it as being a very impressive museum. Did we really need another golf shop?! Such is life.
Anyhow, our chairman has managed to obtain this and the nice thing is that in our Historical Group (Boxted Airfield Historical Group) we have a still living veteran who was actually a tail gunner in one of these. His flak helmet is on display in a museum in Ohio. When recieved the curator thought its owner must surely have persihed such are the holes in it. Henry Farwell stayed in the UK married an English woman and although old is quite active.
Re. my original post – I’ve decided to part with these documents, so if anyone is interested then get in touch for more details.

Where was the museum in Holland?
I’ve got some aircraft recognition silhouettes if you’re interested?
Approx 39 x 56 cm – training aides.
Thanks for the quick response. The reason I asked is because I’ve acquired some documents relating to modifications / inspections for that aircraft, although I can only see XH 764 written, no other numbers. I’ve also in posession of the original Certificate of Inspection and Acceptance – it makes interesting reading.
The Grace Spitfire was flying over an opening ceremony at Fambridge 12.15 Friday, so the news item was about that most probably. Instead of just seeing a few passes, we were spolit with about 15 mins of her flying over the new memorial and it was quite a display.
The airfield there was only open for a short time in 1909 – 7 months. The other Fambridge airfield I beleive was a WW2 base and is also in the vicinity, just across the river.

Can we keep peoples attention to this online petition. A worthwhile cause.
This forthcoming weekend – 5 + 6th May is the large scale model weekend which is an excellent display. The control tower is well worth a look at the same time.

Back to the top please as it’s nearly here.
And a bit of an update:
We have a former WW2 pilot from the USA coming along to sign copies of his autobilography – Clayton Kelly Cross a one time ‘ace’ and now is in his mid 80’s is coming to the UK for just a few days! As he’s not in the best of health and only coming all this way to see us you can’t but admire the man.
We are hoping to see Henry Farwell – a one time rear gunner on Marauders at Boxted. Henry stayed here after the War marrying an English girl. His flack helmet ended up in Wright Patterson museum in Ohio. The museum thought that whoever owned the helmet must surely have perished since the damage to it was so severe. Henry has comes along to most of our Fly Ins and is featured in our CD and Video of the airfield.
We have now found several (about 6) former RAF personnel from the base which is going to be interesting when they come along.
Amongst the other WW2 veterans we have Montgomerys former tank driver coming. A fair number of Korean war veterans also are turning out.
We are a small event and whilst the flying programme adheres to the CAA guidelines it is possible to get fairly close to the parked up aircraft.
The mark V Spitfire will be staying on the ground after its display.
