Why must it always be a shock that there are other factors to a military competition other than performance.

Gripen is better than the LCA MK1 by far cant compare them, it is flying now.

LCA Mk. 2 is a different beast. Same engine even! As I wrote well before the downselect, Gripen’s fate in the contract depends entirely upon how much faith IAF/MOD have in the LCA program. And now we know: they have enough.

It’s not that hard to figure out.

Gripen was ruled out because it impinged too closely on LCA.
MiG-35 was ruled out because it is from Russia.
F-16 & F-18 were ruled out because they are flying bricks.

Typhoon and Rafale were the shortlisted candidates by default.

uh, so you’re saying you’d rather have America continue supporting Mubarak as he was being ousted and the selling of more weapons? uh ok.

America did support Mubarak until it was obvious the regime was no longer tenable. The switch to ‘omg give the people their freedoms!’ was an adroit piece of realpolitik but hardly reflective of a genuine commitment to democracy.

America has supported the authoritarian regimes throughout the region for decades as the best way to keep a lid on first communist and now islamist sentiment, and the peoples of the region will not forget it and nor should they: the latest Zogby poll of arab public opinion has the United States registering 95% “unfavourable” in Egypt.

When Egyptian revolution occurred, US didn’t exactly send more weapons and make vocal support of the government like the Russians.

Don’t go excusing America’s hypocrisy and vaccilation in response to the Arab Spring: they’re scum as well, and nobody is fooled by their ‘oh we supported ur freedomz all along’ turnabout. But aspiring to be universally reviled “just like the Americans” is, well, no aspiration at all. And given Russia’s existing tensions with Islamic radicals, it’s one that’s likely to backfire quite spectacularly.

Point is it is not a particularly unique example of support for a regime having trouble with some of its populace.

You can say that all you like, but when those shiny new Yaks are flying around murdering Syrian civilians the cameras and the people watching them aren’t going to be impressed by your arguments. If those things are used against the Syrian people, Russia will be persona non grata to the entire citizenry, much as the United States is justly reviled throughout the arab world. Like Eminem sez, be smart Russia, don’t be a retard. :rolleyes:

Provided the price is reasonable, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t go for the AH-1Z. In my personal opinion its the most underrated attack helicopter out there.

It’s cheaper than the Apache on almost all levels, yet just as capable in most ways.

It’s a harder hitting machine than machines like the Tiger and Mangusta (which I don’t doubt are great helos), and yet still retains some of the smaller profile that the Cobra series is so well known for. (Certainly harder to visually spot than the AH-64).

Seems like the perfect modern attack helicopter…perhaps I’m missing something…

There’s quite a lot of discussion regarding the AH-1Z to be found in this thread.
