Very very interesting question, and as you said impossible to really answer.

To start with the number of people actualy going onwards to Australia is one factor, but also the question has to be asked is it possible for the airline to operate a stand alone service profitably to somewhere like Singapore, Hong Kong, or Bangkok etc, without the onward connection to Australia.

IMHO I don’t believe that any UK airline will be able to operate regular scheduled services directly to Australia. The deamnd may be there on certain flights, but the possible marginal profit on some flights would be offset by other flights not making money, including the stopovver services which I mentioned previously.

Also there is the Psycological factor and health factor. Do people really want to be stuck in the plane in the air for however many hours it takes to get there? Many people enjoy the stopovers as it enables them to get off the plane, and in many cases smaple the stopover city for a few days before continuing their journey, although some do remain on the aircraft. Additionaly whether a legitimate threat or not, DVT could pose considerable problems to the airlines prospectively running the flight.

I believe that we will have to wait for the next waive of aircraft to come along, which will shorten journey times and increase comfort.

Jeasnske is absolutely correct, if you want to see outside then right at the back or right at the front, although sitting by an engine is interesting, especially on landing where you can actualy see the wheels touch the ground when you land!
