I know – it is a forlorn hope – and the assertation that only UK citizens can sign is a shocker when so many boys from the Commonwealth laid down their lives. Thanks for the support though.
Cheers Roger, all done. 🙂
Thank you Anne, I’ll make sure that information gets passed back!
Lanc wreckage
Peter, you’ve got to be joking if you think that our lottery money will ever be used for anything involved with the preservation of our recent military history or the commemoration of those who fought….. you honestly wouldn’t believe what is a “deserving cause” in the UK……. the last one I read about was a grant awarded to a charity which helps Peruvian farmers breed fatter guinea pigs for consumption! Truly bizarre, so in that respect I do have a degree of sympathy for what they’re trying to achieve as money is obviously short. Like you I feel rather uncomfortable with it though, and you won’t see me parting with any of my hard earned for those lots.
Woodvale’s Phantom
I used to fly with MASUAS out of RAF Woodvale and I remember the Phantom gate guard well. Sorry to hear it’s diasppeared.
The Jackdaw
Just saw this thread and I know it’s nearly dead but…..!
I had a very nice Sunday roast in the Jackdaw pub last week. The pub in which Susannah York meets Christopher Plummer is indeed called the Jackdaw (they didn’t change the name for the film) and it lies in the village of Denton which is on the A260 about 3 miles north of Hawkinge. The pub has lots of RAF memorabilia inside as it was indeed used by pilots from Hawkinge, good beer, nice food, gorgeous waitresses and barmaids, what more could one ask for??!!
Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
RCAF contact details?
Thanks Peter, I will indeed try there if I have no luck…. The problem is, I don’t know who to try and contact in Canada. I am not Canadian and neither was my grandfather, but two of his crew (including the pilot, F/Lt James Munro) were and the letter I have which informed me of the existance of the “captured German documents” was from the RCAF to Jimmy Munro’s mother! Basically the RCAF seem to know what happened to my grandfather whilst the RAF don’t!
Any help with who to contact at the RCAF would be very much appreciated!
