Re Lancaster photograph
Was roaming the net last night and couldn’t believe my eyes when I spotted a copy of Carlos Brown’s crew photo. I already have one because my uncle was George Smith, the first guy in the line up. Obviously each crew member had a copy but the reverse of each photo was differently annotated. I am absolutely fascinated as to where EN830 came across the print. I know of one other copy.
I have only just joined the forum today so not sure of etiquette regarding jumping into a thread like this, but hopefully one of you can keep me right. I have done a huge amount of research into the crew and am now trying to find out about the records of reburial of crashed airmen after the war had ended. Only three of the crew were identified and reburied in Durnbach War Cemetery, while the others including my uncle are on the Runnymede Memorial. If anyone is interested, the photo was actually taken while they were with 50sqn where they did about 14 sorties. Sadly they were on their first outing with 97sqn.
Best Wishes Linda
Thanks everyone for your insights and input. I originally asked the question because the infomation on the card I have didn’t make sense and thanks to your help the actual route was discovered. Like Creaking Door my husband plotted out the route last night and they were certainly slightly off route for whatever reason.
I just looked at a book I have and I can tell you that Von Bonnin shot down a Halifax at N Prum at 02.20, then a second Halifax at S.E. Darmstadt at 02.42 before shooting down my uncle’s lancaster 3 minutes later at 12km S Darmstadt.
Von Bonnin was flying west to east and perhaps the lancaster just happened to be there at the wrong time unfortunately. As Danny says hopefully his records will reveal something of the truth.
Best wishes
Linda.

these dates often cause confusion. They took off at 0.30am on 26th november 1943 and as the ORB states the target was definitelyFrankfurt.

You are obviously aware of Jennie and her website – we have had many conversations and email correspondences. When was your father with 97? Let me know if you have the time.
Linda.
This is quite odd because as you say these are the details for a Halifax of 35 sqn which was lost on the same night! I did originally think it read 35sq but then decided this actually meant something else. The lancaster is of course JB 221 as you state and was the only lancaster of 97 sqn not to return on that op. Do you think it is a manual error that this handwritten card has the details of the wrong type of plane in the route box when everything else refers to the correct crew?
This means that the route is SEE ie. South East East??
Can anyone with access to records check where 35 sqn was flying from and what route they or any other planes took on that night. (25/26 Nov. 1943)
A puzzled Linda.
