I maybe wrong about this, but XH558 was purchased by the Walton family from the MOD because the Waltons owned Bruntingthorpe airfield and had made it clear that they would the be prepared to maintain the aircraft in a ground running condition and they offered the best long term solution for the preservation of the RAF last Vulcan. I do not remember any statement or long term plans to fly the Vulcan, that stupid idea came about much later. The Vulcan Operating Company (TVOC) was set up to raise funds and gain the necessary permission to restore her to airworthyness and it was TVOC that approached the Lottery for funding to do this job. It is the TVOC’s fault that they started on the project before sercuring the necessary funding. All efforts must know be focused on returning XH558 to the condition before TVOC appeared, ie ground running condition.

    From “Aviation International News”:

Don Wylie, Pioneer Upset Recovery Instructor, Killed in T-34 Crash

Don Wylie, the 64-year-old founder and president of both Aviation Safety
Training and Texas Air Aces, and his passenger, 39-year-old Airborne
Express pilot William Eisenhauer, died yesterday morning when their
Beech T-34 reportedly lost its right wing during upset recovery training
in VMC near Conroe, Texas. AST’s Rick Gillenwaters told “AIN Alerts”
today that, contrary to earlier reports, there was no collision with
another AST T-34 that was accompanying Wylie’s airplane. Witnesses in
that airplane, which returned safely to base, said they saw the right
wing of Wylie’s airplane fail cleanly at the root, according to
    Gillenwaters.

The airplane, N44KK, was the same T-34 in which “AIN” contributor Rob
Mark flew with Wylie in the course of preparing the article on upset
training that appears in the current issue of “AIN”. A 1999 crash in
Georgia in which a wing separated from a T-34 during simulated combat
was attributed to stress-related cracks in the wing spar, according to
the NTSB, a weakness that led to the grounding of T-34s used for such
flying pending modifications. Gillenwaters said that N44KK was one of
the AST airplanes that had not yet been modified with strengthened wing
spars, but it had been inspected and deemed fit for upset recovery
training pending modifications, which had been scheduled to be
incorporated in 60 days or so. Texas Air Aces conducts simulated combat
flights. Aviation Safety Training teaches experienced private,
corporate, and airline pilots how to recover from aircraft upsets.

If TFC thinks that an interactive computor display is really needed then surely the best way to provide such information is via the internet. Rather than reinventing the wheel why not put effort into improving and most importantly keeping upto date the existing web site. This improved web site could then be provided ‘live’ to the hangar floor. I would guess that the boffins could arrange some sort of touch screen / ‘big button’ control system to navigate around the TFC website.

I think that the aviation viewing terrace at Birmingham airport has a simlar system. They also have user-controlled web cam. Could such a web cam system be installed in the TFC hangar, it could be fun watching the Engineers at work.

Are Flypast not associated with an artist that is reproducing squadron and station crests, I seem to remember them offering to sponsor his work?

As the Gnat is one of my favorite aircraft I spent lunch time doing a bit of digging on the net, most information shown below is from the CAA and FAA web sites which give all current and past civil regs. Something to remember when using these sites is that they are only as good as the data that is provide to them, so the registered address of the owner may not mean thats where the aircraft is. Also in the USA it is common to register an aircraft even if it is never going to be airworthy. One other note is the third column that starts ‘FL’ this is the Folland construction number and is commonly used as a ‘reg’ by the Americans. Does anybody have a c/n list so as to tie up the missing serials?

How about a big fund raising effort to get the Bruntingthorpe QRA sheds finished so the Lightning’s don’t have to spend another winter outside.

Echo the Red Bull Team Corsair and Widgeon. Also the Swiss Ju-52. How about the Swiss Guy who flies an restored Morane WW2 fighter (I forget the correct number) or the ex Swiss AF target tug, FFW C3600 which has been converted back to its wartime configuration with a Merlin (Hispano ?) engine. If they insist on putting things in boxes and sailing them across the pond from Chino then either the P-51A or P-47B would be most welcome.

So the airshow organiser will have to pay for the Vulcan to attend its show. Thats a good way to the cover some of the costs, but flying the Vulcan will never make enough profit to become self funding. Also look at the number of airshow acts which appear in their first year and then find that they arte not invited back in their second year. Pleadging monies is just throwing good money after bad.
