I try and do a small bit to preserving the memory of those who were lost in WW2 as well as those who survived. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be in a position to be able to meet and talk with surviving veterans from that time………generations coming behind me won’t have that opportunity but hopefully some of the information I’ve gathered and preserved will help them to remember and understand what those brave men and women did for us all.

It’s no coincidence that Bomber Command were attempting to damage Tirpitz below the waterline using converted naval mk XIX spherical contact mines at the end of March & April 1942.

Despite their efforts no damage was inflicted and 64 airmen lost their lives.

Mr Chorley has also published an HCU losses book in same format as the BCL and OTU losses.

    Hi,

Believed to be W1015 going on the dates he mentioned, I will speak with him to see if he remembers any names, he has a razor sharp memory for that time with aircraft etc.

    Thanks for reply

I don’t think it will be W1015 Butler as she was lost on the night of 30/31 March 1942 in Norway with all onboard killed. 35 Squadron were based at Linton-on-Ouse at that time (although operated from Kinloss on the op that W1015 was lost). 35 Squadron didn’t move to Gravely until August 1942 so your TL-P is going to be one of the ones after W1015.

Will try and attach a photograph of W7676 TL-P which replaced W1015 TL-P. The text on the photograph states that W7676 replaced W7656 lost on Tirpitz ops in April 1942. That’s correct, I had forgotten that a TL-P was lost on the April op against Tirpitz as well as the March one.

Since W7676 was lost 28/29 August 1942 it may even have been a later TL-P that you are looking for. Don’t know if I’ve got a note of which one replaced W7676 but can check my files if you like.

    Crew lost on W7676 TL-P were Sgt D A V John, Sgt M W Booth, P/O A F Birley, Sgt K A Higgs, Sgt A Priestley, Sgt A E Groundsell and Sgt G A Doman.

Hi, There are plenty of photographs of a 35 Sqdn with the TL-P going around in various books and I expect online too. Do you happen to know the serial number? I have some pics (black and white) of W7676 TL-P which I believe replaced W1015 TL-P which was lost in March 1942.

Does your father-in-law happen to remember the names of the crew?

    Hi all,

during my research today I have found parts of little bones from one of the crew member of the crash aircraft where I research (http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?p=1049971#post1049971)

Tomorrow I must search for more parts into the soil, because on Monday the located signs should be recovered (possible the engines).

I need a picture of a typical RAF crew member dogtag. May be I can find one of a dogtag on the crash site. I have found also little parts of the uniform and a litte badge in form of a eagle. Between this parts I have found some parts of gauges and instruments, so I think the bones and personal items are from one of the pilots…

I hope someone can show here a typical dogtag !

    Thanks

    Nils

Nills, if you have found human remains then I’m sure you should stop any further disturbance and contact the relevant authorities. These dead airmen should be treated with respect.

Someone might be able to give you more specific details about exactly where to look at the National Archives for the files of the particular men you are researching if you post a request on RAF Commands forum http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID6&conf=DCConfID1

Plenty people on that forum have waded through the Escape and Evasion papers and POW Questionnaires so may be able to point you in a more certain direction.

There may be Escape and Evasion Reports for the crew who escaped and similarly there may be POW questionnaires completed after release for the ones who were POW.

Wade through the screeds on this page of info from the National Archives at Kew. I expect you would have to visit the archives in person in order to obtain copies or get someone to go hunting on your behalf.

“It appears that debris and wreckage from this aircraft, and probably also from W1044 ZA-D which crashed nearby, was scattered over a wide area and also carried further afield by the currents in the fjords.”

I seriously doubt you would find very much. In addition, I don’t believe that the relatives of these aircraft would be very eager for any wreckage to be disturbed since there were a number of bodies never recovered from these two Halifaxes.

PS: Cees, that photograph in your first post should be credited to the Flyvrak website should it not?
