Great site but bandwidth overwhelmed at present. Found a bomb hit very close to my grandmother’s house in Tottenham, but fortunately my mother had been evacuated to Lincolnshire..otherwise maybe no me!!
The authors of the second AM article in August 1976 were John Pothecary, and R A Clare, who worked on the design of the aircraft. Looking at the route of the water and oil cooling pipes to the radiator on the cutaway drawing, it occurred to me that the pilot would have had a very hot seat indeed.
Apologies for the thread hijack, but here are some snaps of the Nimrod taken the other day..looks in pretty good nick to me, I think judging the shady side of the aircraft on the original picture is a bit misleading.

I want to see a re-enactor at Legends dressed like the erk in the cockpit !
That’s authenticity.
That’s good news…best of luck for the future of your excellent project.
Paid a flying visit to Coventry yesterday and after visiting the excellent MAM, taxied down to the West Apron to see if we could sneak a look at the big pistons on the Airbase site. Very impressed with WR963 and surprised to find work being done inside on such a nippy day. It’s really heartening to see such care and expertise lavished on an airframe, and hopefully life will continue beyond the present upheavals and uncertainties. And thanks for letting us in to have a look.

Wow! I’ve got an heirloom!
As they always say on the Antiques Roadshow…we won’t be selling it, it’ll stay in the family.
If Old Warden has another fast jet day, she MUST be booked to appear…that would an awesome place for a display.
There is another very fine 48 page booklet celebrating the art of the cutaway drawing called Beneath The Skin…published to accompany an exhibition of the same name in 1998. It covers Flight International artists from the Avro 641 in 1934 to the F-22 in 1997..aircraft, engines, space vehicles. Beautiful works of art, worth tracking down if you’re a fan of such things.
Another vote for Bill Gunston’s cutaway book..an absolute steal at the Works price. Beautiful artwork and very informative text. And I got the Boy’s Book of Airfix to complete the nostalgia-fest! Get ’em while you can.
Excellent, thanks for that..all I need to know!
My thoughts exactly when listening to Radio 4 this morning…
BBC4. It’s repeated every few months. Great programme, well worth catching. If you love steam locos.
Here is TE311 at Biggin Hill, BoB display on 15th September 1973 serving her time with the Demonstration Flight.

Here are some memories from August 1973….Tri-X in D76 for those interested…the abiding impression of the place was the pristine condition of the exhibits in light and space..and I particularly liked the upper galleries too. Still love the place though, we are very very fortunate to have it.
