Re the Weathersfield accident…Sailplane and Gliding, June/July 1983, p124
“A 17 year-old ATC cadet, Ian Sutton of Great Bardfield, Essex, was killed on April 16 in a T-31 when coming in to land at RAF Weathersfield, near Haverhill. His instructor, RAF Reserve Flt Lt John Knock, aged 61 of Marks Tey, near Colchester, received head and back injuries. The RAF are investigating the accident.”
A flying Bantam..wow. Good luck to them, thanks for the info, Eric.
Good to have you back. This thread is priceless, it documents the tireless hard work behind the scenes at DX, all year round that enables us to feed our passion. Long may it continue.
Excellent website, thanks for that.
Why “Flapjack”? Anybody know the reason?
Mew Gull and Comet for classic racer formation next year……fingers crossed.
Judging by that model of Britannia, he obviously had a true understanding of model engineering as well !!
Sad news indeed. A fine display pilot and fondly remembered in the company of Dicky Martin, Angus McVitie, Neil Williams, Des Penrose, Alan Wheeler and many others we have been lucky enough to see display at OW over the years. A privilege to have seen him fly.
RIP
Fantome, methinks.
Sounds like a great find.
Anna Walker was delightful, with a fascinating aviation pedigree, but Libby Purves managed to get the words “aeroplane” and “plummet” into the interview within a short space of time. Gawd ‘elp us!
I would also recommend Don Middleton’s book “Test Pilots, The Story of British Test Flying 1903-1984”. Very readable, very authoritative and well illustrated. Not of course a first hand account, as are many of the other suggestions.
Very poignant.
