RE: UN security council
Well, to me, the Security Council, particularly the permanent members, make a bad representation for the rest of the world. I mean, it seems a little strange to me that Britain and France retain their permanent spots and veto powers whilst what I consider to be more powerful countries (powerful does not necessarily mean militarily in this case) like India and Japan do not. Oh, and lets just forget about any sort of representation from Africa or South America… Besides, the USA basically has two votes now along with its lackey Britain… 😉

Geez, get over it, it’s a forum, there are bound to be people who will disagree with you now and then… 🙂
However, if you’re taking the time off to pick ur uni work-rate up, I recommend it. I’ve been gone for a couple of months now, cos I fell behind with university and ended up failing two subjects in first semester so I felt I needed to devote more time to studies, but it’s all better now 🙂

RE: Australia’s refugee problem
I am genuinely sorry if I offended you Wombat, after reading what I wrote, I can see that some of what I said was far too harsh and plainly wrong. I just got a hot head about this issue in particular because – in my opinion – the federal government is blindly leading Australia down a path which can only lead to the race riots we see today in America and Britain and – god forbid – something like Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Instead of fostering compassion and goodwill amongst our populace, the federal government seems more concerned in fostering as much ill-meaning to people of non-Anglo-Saxon descent as possible. After all, the One Nation vote is a sizeable 10% and the Coalition wants that back. Mind you, that sizeable 10% of Australians who feel this particular way about foreigners is still a tiny minority compared to the remaining 90%.
I must digress however, that I believe the main reason for the federal goverment’s win in last years election was that it was based almost entirely on fear. The incumbent government used the known and powerful effect to bolster their vote in a time when the Australia people did not want to see change. It was also due to the inability of the labour party to take a stance, any stance, on any issue. That’s why their vote deserted to the Greens, and pretty much all swinging voters went Coalition. This will not last.
“my predisposition towards the poms means I favour them, probably unfairly.” Well at least you acknowledge the inherent unfairness of thinking this way. You call it predisposition, I would call it ethno-racial bias, but hey, differing opinions…
I hope we can still get along peacefully-ish. Again, I apologise for the personal attacks, they were not warranted, and wrong. Don’t think for one second that I’m backing down from my stand though ;).

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-07-02 AT 06:37Â AM (GMT)]Wombat, your true colours have shone through:
“Personally, being half Pom myself, I don’t mind how many Brits overstay – they’re welcome in my book.”
So a bunch of overstaying Brits taking Aussie jobs is better than a bunch of Afghani/Pakistanis taking Aussie jobs? Where the hell do you draw the line between Brits ILLEGALLY staying in Australia and Afghanis/Pakistanis illegally staying in Australia?
“We have a lot of trouble with crime related to ethnic groups, and the Anglo-Saxon background of Australians is gradually being overtaken in population numbers because of low natural birth rates and large proportions of immigrants being from Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds.”
Didn’t hear the Aborigines complaining when the Brits practically wiped them out (well, they did in Tasmania, the only recorded case in the world ALL RECORDED HUMAN HISTORY of “successful, total” genocide of a race). And at last check, people of non-European descent comprised approx. 9% of Australia’s population. Overtaken? Hardly…
You speak of xenophobia as if it is a right that we have. It is NOT. It is WRONG, it DISGUSTS ME, and frankly, YOU DISGUST ME. I am glad not all fellow Australians feel the way you do, because we would be a SH!THOUSE country if we did. You see only the bad points which immigration has brought to this country, yet forget that this country was born as a place of detention for the British felons. Are the immigrants coming now any worse than those forced to come in the late 1700s up to the 1800s?
Don’t get me wrong, we do attract a proportion of the “wrong” people, those who come just to use Australia’s wealth economically and prey on our generally good, friendly and welcoming nature, and we need a well-planned, fair and enforced immigration program to handle these peopl, but these “wrong” people are not just a proportion of the illegal immigrants at Woomera and the like, they also include the British backpackers who take the job I want at the pub whilst here illegally, and they also include people like you, who sees race as a defining aspect of human nature above all else.

RE: Australia’s refugee problem
Our “refugee” policy stinks. We _do_ need the detention centres, because we cannot readily release anyone attempting to enter into the wider community. But what we _really_ need is faster processing so that those who _are_ genuine refugees are granted entry and those who _aren’t_ are immediately shipped back to wence they came without further ado. Keeping people, families including children in detention for up to 2 years whilst their applications are being processed is simply not acceptable. The process should not take longer than a month. I’d like to see you maintain perfect behaviour for 2 years if you are confined to Woomera.

“I cannot believe what I’m hearing. The United States a “rogue” state?! What a load of crap! I’ve heard so much nonsense about how and why the United States is the bad guy on here.”
Yup, good argument mate, very conclusive and persuasive.
“Nobody is perfect and all countries have done bad things, but the things the United States has done doesn’t even compare to some of the things the real rogue nations have done”
And if those rogue states should suffer for their wrong deeds, why shouldn’t the US? The US applies the laws of human rights only when it suits them.
“The truth is that people are simply looking for a reson to knock the U.S. because we are the most successful country to date”
And you say you aren’t arrogant or ignorant…
How exactly do you come to the conclusion “the most successful country to date”? What, ever since the beginnings of human civilization? On a military/industrial/economical platform, the US doesn’t even come close to the domination the Romans, Greeks and Chinese enjoyed at the height of their ancient civilizations.
“The funny thing is that so many of you are so convinced that you know how Americans are”
No, Americans as a whole are very nice people. A lot of us are simply convinced that under current and past policies, the US is not doing as good a job as it could and should as the world’s current most powerful nation. Being all-powerful doesn’t mean you can just gloat about it, it carries responsibilities that the US seems unwilling to meet, instead using its superiority to further its own ways instead of the world’s.
“The more crap I hear off this board, the more fortunate I feel to live in the United States.”
Joy, you go on thinking that.

RE: US-rogue nation in the making?????
Can’t you see the pattern?
Free trade for everybody else, tariffs for Americans.
International Criminal Court for everybody, oh, except for Americans.
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty for everybody, oh, except the Americans.
Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty, but for the US.
Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty for everybody else (applicable), not for the US…

We do, it’s called the Premier League :). In all seriousness, we will not have a cohesive team until our star players stop flying off to the big European leagues chasing the cash and support our local league instead…
