^^^Mixtec, 😉
PCI is much slower than even AGP (which is the current, primary graphics card interface on the Motherboard). PCIe on the other hand is like comparing a old Skoda to a Lamborghini Diablo.
There is a new PCI standard refered to as PCI Express that is coming out. Read this, its explains everything:
http://www.via.com.tw/en/pci-express/intro.jsp
My advice would be to wait 6 months with the system you have, add a graphics card and/or adjust the scenery settings in FS to get the smoothness you want.
Another thing to consider is that graphics cards are making the switch from AGP to PCI slots, so you may want to wait on that.
What do we suggest running on it?
BF, IL2, any more???
That would be optimum if someone had some spare computers with decent specs and a open broadband connection, they could provide multiple servers with FS, BF, IL-2 and a webpage to get common freeware plane downloads for FS.
Simmer- In all seeing eye, go to files>user profile and fill out the profile menu so I can find you in a buddy search. And lets use our Keymags names so everyone knows who everyone is. Then PM me when you have a time to meet and will give it a dry run to make sure everything works, maybe we could give Silent Heroes a shot first.
aj_march- I know what you mean about Battle of Britain, its very easy to stay out of AA by flying low since the AA is situated high on the cliffs. Give Forgotten Battles a try though, its a huge download, but the flight physics are very realistic and has better overall graphics than regular BF42.
This is a longshot, but I have had the same problem with my cable connection. In my case I discovered when installing windows that the guy who installed it before didnt install the network drivers for my mobo creating some kind of ip conflict. And since Im connected to my cable modem by LAN connection, that solved it.
Continueing with the idea of a Keymags FS server, since alot of nice plane downloads on simviation.com, avsim.com and flightsim.com are freeware. Keymags could provide a collection of these downloads for us to use on the server since the default planes are absolutely the worst. And of course you would need to have these planes in your FS files in order to see others flying them. And if there is anyone out there with a spare computer with decent specs and an ample computer conection, maybe they can volunteer to provide such a server for everyone here.
Id like to mention the following files get deleted out of my FS Aircraft folder because I cant stand to see them: Curtiss Jenny, DeHavilland Comet, Lockheed Vega, Spirit of StLouis, Wright Flyer, Vickers Vimy, Ford Trimotor. And if anyone can tell me how I can change the Cessna Skyhawk from being the opening default so I can delete it, Id appreciate it.
Helidriver- If you get 3 ghz processor, 1 gig of RAM and an X800 XT card, you are going to have a top of the line rig that will handle any game you want to play. With FS2004 you are going to have framerates maybe up to a couple a hundred frames per sec at a res of 1280 x 1024 with all the scenery and ground texture settings maxed. If you want to get by cheap with the rig you have, dont go and get a top of the line processor which will cost $300 to $800 bucks and skimp on all the rest of the stuff. Money to upgrade should be spent on RAM, a high end mobo, and a reasonably priced graphics card first. You can get a ATI 9200 for about a $100 now. That will handle FS2004 well at 1024 x 768 with medium to high texture settings. If you want some recomendations on good mobos, I can name some for you.
Hey Biggles- Have you checked out the Battlefield thread? You have got to try some BF mods with us.
I just found a game server browser that blows Gamespy out of the water. Its called All Seeing Eye, and you can download it here:
http://www.udpsoft.com/eye2/index.html
Finding servers for mods like Forgotten Hope is as easy as checking a box.
Simmer- Lets try this out before we announce a meeting time.
Also I want to mention a BF mod called Silent Heroes about a modern day Swedish invasion of Norway. As rediculous as that sounds it looks like a good sim. Check out these screenshots:
http://www.silentheroes.se/screens.php
Believe it or not, periscopes were painted pink because it was thought that pink took on the hue of the surrounding colors. I even saw a pink A-4 skyhawk on a US carrier once. It was a light shade of pink, but it was pink.
Bader- I just tried the patch, and I have to say Im a little disappointed. The air wing that follows me moved in exact sinchronization with my plane, every little wing movement. That was a disappointment because the planes AI in the original is really natural looking where it looks like each plane is being steered individually in responce to your movements. The damage my plane looked didnt look good, wings were cut in straight lines on the same place on each wing. My Crash into water was worse than the original, my plane turned into two planes and bounced on the water. Somehow youve seemed to have lost alot of the good stuff of the original.
OMG! I heard about your group, but I thought it was just a bunch of BoB enthusiasts trying to update the game to XP compliance. You must have totally redone the engine to get that level of graphic detail. I cant believe this is a free patch, this looks like it could go right back on the retail market. Beautiful job!
Thanks The Joker. I personally think Gamespy has a great buddy system for going on servers together that works like instant messaging. Add to that that everyone would be looking at the same server list on gamespy and could chat to eachother on in server list chat room. And Gamespy has a better list of servers than the ingame list as well as better access to mods.
Do you know how much a games server costs? Not sure what Key would get out of it, however I for one would be willing to pay a couple of quid a month to have access.
I dont think there would be hardly any cost for keymags at all. I believe they run their own forum servers which is on their own high bandwidth internet connection and have full time systems administrator to run it. Its really just a matter of buying another computer to run as a game server, there is no extra cost other than that one time purchase. To give you an idea of what kind of bandwidth is being given away now, Google is giving Gmail accounts that have 1 gig of storage space, yahoo and hotmail are going to increase their space to 100 mb to try and counter this.
Ignore that last post I meant point of existense. DC type mod for vietnam, looks amazing but think its still in the early-ish stages.
Definately not early-ish stages of release, Eve of Destruction was released before Battlefield Vietnam was even announced. I still think EoD has better maps despite the fact that DICE (BF42s developer) copied the mod. This time around, DICE has hired Trauma studios, the studio that did DC to work on Battlefield 2 with them. I guess DICE has learned their lesson about trying to do one better than mod teams.
Stuart25- You can download all the BF42 mods here:
http://bfmods.myexp.de/?d=0&page=download
Yes they all install automatically, no having to browse for certain folders or anything. You need to install the 1.6 patch for BF42 before these mods will run, you can get that here:
http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/1942/us/gamedemo.jsp?state=010010
The most popular is Desert Combat, it is all modern weapons in a Coalition vs Iraq setting. Youll find more DC servers online than for BF42. Eve of Destruction is Vietnam mod and is as good or better than Battlefield Vietnam. Galactic Conquest is a Star Wars game that is better than the Lucas Arts Star Wars series. You can find servers for these mods on Gamespy. Then there is Battlefield 1918 a WW1 mod, it only has 2 singleplay maps but a bunch of maps on their server. The ip address for their server is: 213.202.206.76 Forgotten Hope is a WW2 mod, but much more realistic and has better quality graphics than BF42. Once you try forgotten hope, youll never go back to vanilla BF42. Youll have to do an internet search to find servers for it. Battlefield Pirates is really excellent and actually has a hot air balloon combat map. The ip for that one is: 69.93.124.197 Many of these mods dont have singleplayer mode, so you can only play them online.
Me and Simmer are going online for some Desert Combat and have posted a thread about it called “Battlefield”. We will posting some times to meet next week. I suggest using Gamespy as its very easy to join freinds online with their buddy system which is sort of like a instant messenger system for gaming.
