I suggested the idea of a anti-torpedo torpedo on sci.military.naval, and they thought it was an interesting idea. This torpedo would actually go out and destroy incoming torpedos. I heard the russians were coming up with a superfast torpedo that goes the speed of sound (measured in air), that would be something difficult to stop.
We’re going to start out just joining servers together, but if enough people are interested we may set up our own server. Desert Combat is played more online than BF42, and good jet and helicoptor pilots own the maps. But we will try and find maps with only a few people as crowded maps can be unforgiving to noobs. The idea is to have fun. We could try some team tactics together like attacking enemy bases together in a helicoptor, or capture the flag tactics, and alot of other stuff. For those of you really into BF42 mods, we could try some other good ones like Battlefield 1918 and Forgotten Hope. So we will post a time next week when we go on.
By far the best for me is Rowans Battle of Britain. Its billed as a strategy game but its really not, its a sim. You can allocate fighters to different squadrons, but once the planes are in the air you no longer have any conrol, its just you in one plane. What makes this so great is that you are really dealing with hundreds of planes coming across in realtime, in real distances. And there is an exact number of planes on each side so kills are counted against the overall number of each sides. So you really are fighting the Battle of Britain, its not like fighters are just spawning out of nowhere in endless scripted missions. If you set your plane with unlimited fuel and ammo, you can really follow the german bombers back to thier base and continue to strafe them as they land and park. This sim is 3 years old now so the graphics arent at current standard, but they are still plenty good. Watching the german bombers drop their sticks of bombs over London is nightmarishly real. If the graphics were updated on this sim to IL-2 level, this game would be unbeatable. Its interesting to note that the IL-2 design teams next project after Pacifac Fighters is to do a Battle of Britain Sim.
Congratulations Ben- History was a wise choice for you, much more interesting than just majoring in journalism which I know is what youre shooting for.
I want to mention that the PZL skorpion would never make it as a combat aircraft because its range is so short, 300 km, If you look at the pictures on this site you can plainly see that there is no room in the fuselage to hold any significant amount of fuel.

Im wondering also if someone could briefly describe how a virtual airline works. Are there scheduled time you have to be at your computer to fly a route? If your on an international airline, do you have to fly the whole route in real time, say like for 10 hours?
PAF Fan- I have serious doubts that the Sabre could outturn a Gnat. The Sabre was seriously outmatched by the Mig-15 in the Korean war in manuerverability as well as climb. The Sabre was a heavy, stiff plane to fly. Only unconventional fighting tactics were able to allow US pilots a reasonably high kill rate, very similar to the tactics Hellcat pilots used against Zeros in WW2.
edisonone- The A-4 Skyhawk is indeed a remarkable jet, but its in the same size/weight/power class as the brazilian AMX. So its not quite a mini fighter.
Ive got a Sidewinder, but thats all they sell here in Mexico is Sidewinders and cheap Saiteks since flight simming isnt big here. If you go into a CompUSA or BestBuy in the US, they have about 30 joystickes all lined up of all different brands. But I only go for look and feel of the stick and would never need to spend more than $50 bucks for one. So my Sidewinder does the job pretty well.
Perhaps we oughta arrange a friendly battle? I reckon a few people on this forum would like to join in for a few maps.
Hey Im in for that! It would be great if we had our own server so we could fly on the really good maps. PM me if youre planning to go on, and maybe we can meet on some servers. And thanks for that helicopter tutorial, thats exactly what Ive been looking for. That Bf-109 looks really sharp, alot higher res than what you say you have, especially the edges, smooth, no jaggedness at all.
I will eventually be buying a new computer and want to outfit it for the very best flight sim games, and combat sims too.
Would people recommend 512MB of RAM right off or even 1GB? I know it is cheap now.
And for the CPU, P4 or Athlon?
And the 3D card? 128MB or 256MB? What is currently the best you can get?
And for the screen? LCD flat or large CFT?
Get a gig of RAM, 512 is just the bare minimum. If you have a harddrive full of programs, they take up RAM even when not running. Id even get more than 1 gig if your getting a high end CPU. Athlons are by far better for gaming, the Athlon 64s currently the top of the line for gaming performance. For a monitor get a 19 inch, 17 doesnt support the high res that the latest graphic cards allow. I personally like flat screen CRT monitors over LCD screens because I feel the colors just look more natural (as well as being alot cheaper), but its a matter of preference. As for graphic card memory, thats not the only factor involved in performance. A higher end 128 card can out perform a 256 card. The two top of the line graphic cards are the Nividia GeForce 6800 Ultra and the ATI Radeon X800 XT. Both cards are about the same in price and performance, but the Geforce requires a 480 watt powersupply which is an extra cost. My recomendation is either get a lower midrange card like the ATI 9200 128 mb which will handle any current game, or splurge on the aforementioned top of the line cards for ultra high res and not waste your money in between.
Thanks for that helicopter info Simmer, Ill see about trying to configure some kind of cyclic control on my stick. Im just at the point where I can sort of stay level and go somewhere, I got a long ways to go. I know what you mean about guys hanging around the runway for aircraft spawns, but on the other hand I dont like to see guys who crash planes respawn at airfields and hog the plane they just crashed, so I dont mind seeing a couple of guys waiting for planes to spawn if there are enough guys in the field. No Fly Zone is a really hot aircombat map with jets for everyone.
Lets not forget the Folland Gnat, this fighter proved itself in combat as the Sabre Slayer for the IAF. It is still a very potent fighter and can still hold itself against most anything at low level. I believe should be put back in production as a low cost point defence fighter, as well as for pilot flight time to reduce cost and wear on front line fighters.
Its not that hard Mixtec- in fact i prefer using the keyboard/mouse combo. A little…different, yes, but not impossible with practice!
Well if you say you can fly helicoptors well, I trust you know what youre doing because I still cant fly those things with any sort of control. It amazes me how good some guys are at pinpoint bombing, I still cant decide whether to use chase view so I can see where the bombs hit or cockpit view for steering accuracy. Im trying to find some BF42/DC clans on the net to find guys to give me pointers on that.
MS has stopped making joystickes.
Dont buy 133 Mhz memory, they dont sell it for good reason. Buy whichever DDR RAM your mobo will support.
