RE: Natural gas…
Geforce- Just want to let you know that Im not buying your 30% pollution stats for the US. Yes its true that fad for driving these huge SUVs that get 10 miles to the gallon and most of which have never been on dirt is really rediculas. But on the other hand your not going to strongarm the US into driving these compact cars with a .6 liter engine, your not even going to get motorcycle riders to use engines that small. The US has very good pollution standards compared to the rest of the world, standards which other countrys would do well to live up to. Lima Peru with a pop of 8 million, and a very large population of cars probably pollutes more than 1/4 of the cars in the US. Thats no exageration if youve seen the millions of cars that belch smoke there, and are familiar with how bad a place like los angelos was 30 years ago, before higher emmisions standards were in place.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-08-02 AT 06:36 PM (GMT)]Primer- A rule of thumb about microsoft, is if they give something away, its to get you to use it (get stuck with their standard). The .NET thing was originally a MS plan to takeover the internet and software development. Thankfully its a flop. If there giving you source code, its with the hidden agenda that by letting you steal it, youll be living your life according to MS.
frank-Must you use words like “skins”. Theres nothing more cornball than MS buzzwords.

RE: What is your best aviation movie?
I think Tora Tora Tora was the best aviation movie Ive seen as far as realistcally depicting mil av warfare. I saw a movie with Rock Hudson that was made back in the sixtys about being put in charge of a SAC wing. It also realistally depicted mil aviation, I cant stand aviation movies contrived to be dramatic.

RE: Natural gas…
Hand78-
It’s a shame that the US (5% o fthe ww population and 30% of the pollution) don’t commit to the necessary effort to fix this problem.
Im going to call bull on that one. You making the assumption that oil/fuel use = pollution, the US has very good controls and regulations for both indusrial and automobile pollution. Having lived in Peru, I can tell you a large percentage of private autos and public transport bellow out clouds of smoke out their exaust. The US does NOT produce 30% of the worlds pollution. You have no concern whatsover for the damage being done in developing countrys and are simply making a cheap stab at the USs industrial capacity. France using nuclear power is still polluting since there hasnt been found a sufficient way to dispose of nuclear waste.

RE: Windows XP
Frank- VMS was designed by the same guy who designed NT, David Cutler. Id be curious to know how much Bill payed him to do that considering the NT kernal is MSs bread and butter. I dont think XP is an improvement over win2K. When the compatability source code is released, there will finally be some competition for windows…oh happy day.

RE: genetic engineering
In reality the difference is that now the farmer gets just the semen from the ram… with GE he will get the ram.
Obviously the ram will have to mature before it can be used for breeding stock but at least the farmer will know exactly what he is getting.
Your wrong Garry, whether you have semen of a ram or an actual ram, either way its not genetically altered. Yes its possible to replicate changes that occure natuarally with GE, its also possible to go far beyond what can be done with natural breeding. Sofar, we havent experienced a breakdown resulting from a GE mistake, but its very possible. Regretably I cant back up the example I brought up about the GE salman with more specifac info about the disaster that could be wrought with its breeding with natural species, it was just something I came across a year or two ago.
Introducing a GE modified member to the rest of the population will not give all of the members of that population the new changed genes… patting a dog doesn’t transfer dog genes to your hand.
If the introduced GE member with some genetic error or weakness is allowed to reproduce then its offspring have something to worry about but the other members of the lifeform type are quite safe. If the error is fatal then the death of the individual will stop the bad genes propagating…
Your wrong Garry, if you breed a pony with a thoroughbred, that ponys genetics will effect all its decendants, its mathematically predictable just howmuch change it will do. With GE your completely splicing out a section of gene and puting in something different. As is seen sofar, species are able to withstand these abrupt change that have been tried sofar. What you cant seem to understand is that GE doesnt wash out, its a permant part of the Species. If things go bad say with the GE corn that has been found in europe, theres nothing original to go back to because its not isolated, its being intermixed. With natural mistakes you can just breed out problems as you say. With GE its more that dominant and resesive naturally occuring GE, its something entirely new that has changed the species thats out of the control of normal mutations.
Im not an expert on this subject, I wouldnt even say Im knowedgeable. But your clearly blind to what the basics of what GE is and what it can do. I have a feeling youll respond the same as you have these last few posts of yours. In that case Ill have to live this dicuscian as it stands.
