empty tank
Is there no chance at all? Isn’t it something to do with the fuel tank being where it is in case it had to belly land?
By the time it gets high enough to fall and hurt itself that tank is nearly empty!!! which, without the luxury of in flight refuling, is another good reason not to go too far from home in a Lightning so whats the point.

LPG??
not the happy chappies up north a bit I hope.
Some sadistic sod, from RR I presume, fed one (a 302) a shovel full of nuts and bolts just to see what would happen and the bloody thing kept on for over half an hour at 65% then quit rather suddenly, well wouldnt you.
Honest seen the video, well it was film in those days, so Avons would run well on (the) LPG!!! cheaper than JP too.
That donk is nearly as ruged as a Spey I should say.

Brunty Open Day 28 Aug
Well no comments??
Was it that bad??
Lot of work went into it and only one scheduled aircraft didn’t run..
All organisations seemed to do well..

Well I for one was impressed, bloody impressed, the Victor runs where something else again, well done lads. as a lightning man makes you feel kind a small, if I wasnt so adicted to the Lightning i might just change allegiance. dont panic RMC only joking.
Nice to see 904 start up first time and belt off down the strip with both donkies on full song, some wowk been done there then, well done lads.
good run from the hunter as well.
Felt for the Buck thank God that doesn’t happen to us, well not in public any way.
all in all a good day with the inevitable networking that goes on.

That’s a point the way the cost of diesel is going it will soon be competitive!!
What Taxation class would it come under?
Insurance as a road vehicle would be a lot less than an aircraft.
If rally cars can take to the air without the CAA getting all het up perhaps that’s where we have been going wrong, mmmmmmmm.
So its an off-road vehicle then taxed and insured road legal. With a tendency to take BIG jumps, off the road.
Have I missed something here!!!

a view of XS458
Hi
All the frustated XS458 watchers.
Would you have expected to get onto heathrow for a good close up of Concorde taking off I think not somehow.
Where is the connection you ask. Well cranfield is governed by the same rules, CAA rules that is, as LHR; so like the rest of us entry is restricted to authorised persons.
I expect that running the aircraft depends on many things like servicability, its a lightning for christs sake, weather, airfield operating restraints and there dozens of flying school operating there paying good money for its use.
Dave Walton has a bloody great back garden called Bruntingthorp and the LPG, God bless em, are his guests. this is a whole different ball game.
You could come and see the aircraft run in my back garden any time, problem I dont have one and it wouldnt fit stationary never mind at full gallop.

A point you all miss is that without a functional airframe underneath there is nothing to attach the paint to. The important thing about XS458 is she is serviced to a standard high enough to allow it to run on a bussey GA airfield, and we often have to meet slot times for the runs, radio has to be 100% reliable as do breaks chute etc.

458 is a guest of Cranfield and enjoys a lot of support there, This is a very active GA comercial airfield and it is not practical to have public swarming all over it, invited or not. The owner has to preserve his unique relationship with this very active airfield.
The airframe is worked on every saturday and it is aimed to do antidet runs on engines and systems every 28 days.
