If anyone is surprised by the allegations of this story (billions of dollars at stake by doing business with a non-elected government that controls the local media and allows little…if any…internal political opposition) let me suggest:
    1. Aren’t you missing Thunderbirds?
    2. The cement on the canopy of the airfix kit you’re building should be dry now…
    and
    3. Isn’t it past your bedtime?
    😀 😀 😀

What makes you think it’s an airfix kit?

Mind you I do tend to agree with you. Ignoring the fact that SA is possibly not the sort of regime we should morally be supporting you have to wonder that if bribery is the way business is done in SA then what’s the problem?

Defence deals ‘to be years late’

The MoD said it was negotiating harder with manufacturers
The Ministry of Defence’s biggest equipment purchases will be delivered almost three years late on average, a report suggests.
The National Audit Office also found the 19 deals it monitored would cost £27bn – 11% over the original budget.

But its report said yearly increases to delays had “slowed” and that the MoD had recognised the “need to tighten its control of costs”.

The Tories said there was a “growing crisis” in the military.

    Less increase in delays

The NAO looked at orders for equipment such as air-to-air missiles, armoured vehicles, radios and submarines.

The average delay in delivery would be 33 months, it found.

Orders fell further behind by an average of 1.7 months last year – compared with 2.4 months the year before.

We are going to turn this charity into a business

    Sir Peter Spencer, MoD

    RAF fleet ‘out of date’

Five of the 19 deals looked at dropped further behind schedule, with 12 staying the same and two being realised earlier than anticipated.

Forecast costs for the next generation of nuclear submarines – known as the Astute Class – increased by £164m last year because of “technical factors”.

Those for the new Type 45 destroyers went up £157m.

    ‘Could leave gaps’

The NAO revealed that the MoD had made savings of £333m over the year, but noted that some of this money had been found by reducing orders.

It warned that this could leave gaps in future fighting capability.

But Procurement Minister Lord Drayson said of the latest report: “I am pleased that the NAO has recognised the work that we have done to tighten our control of costs and live better within our means while continuing to deliver top class equipment to our troops.

“We must trade performance, cost and time to live within our means. We will benefit in the longer term from the tough decisions we have taken now”.

Chief of Defence Procurement Sir Peter Spencer said the MoD was refusing to pay “inflated” prices demanded by manufacturers to use Typhoon planes to test the new Meteor missiles.

The missiles are considered vital weaponry for the new European fighter aircraft.

Sir Peter said: “We are going to turn this charity into a business, and a cost-effective business.

“We are not prepared to pay inflated prices for risks we believe should be under the control of industry.

“We have found a less risky way through…until we get a more sensible proposal.”

But Edward Leigh, chairman of the Commons public accounts committee, said: “You don’t get something for nothing – so it leaves me wondering what cuts have been made in other parts of the military to accommodate this financial reshuffle.”

Shadow defence secretary Liam Fox said: “The MoD is resorting to reducing the quantities of equipment on order as a way of saving money for the Treasury.

“With our commitments increasing, this seriously risks hindering the government’s ability to provide our forces with the equipment they need to conduct future operations.”

The armed forces were 6,330 below their required strength at the beginning of October – with the deficit up from 5,170 in July, MoD figures show.

ROYAL NAVY’S WEAPONS PROJECTS AFFECTED BY DELAYS AND COST TROUBLES
    By James Boxell

    Published: November 24 2006 02:00 | Last updated: November 24 2006 02:00

The Royal Navy’s two most important weapons projects have been hit by fresh cost overruns and delays, leading to renewed calls from the government for an urgent restructuring of the British naval industry, writes James Boxell.

According to a report from the National Audit Office, published today, the Astute submarine programme, dogged by cost overruns in the past, has slipped another £164m over budget, though it is due to be delivered ahead of schedule.

The Astute is one of the cost overruns, is CVF the other? The FT website contains only part of the story and stops short of naming the second project.

Just to open the debate up. Accepting that the UK does want and need a nuclear weapons system are SSBNs a) the best tool for the job and b) the most cost effective system?

Could using another form, say air and sub launched cruise missiles be better as the delivery systems could also be used for conventional warheads that would be used in anger sometime in their life? This could include the purchase of some serious bombers.

    Discuss!

I cant see there being many volunteers for that one! 😮

Perhaps that was a situation where 1 pressed man was worth 10 volunteers!

I was once on hiliday with some friends in Cornwall. As a Sea King flew past I said to my friends 10 year old son “that’s a Sea King” he replied “what’s it seeking?”, this went on for some while before I could explain that it wasn’t seeking anything, at least not at the time!

100000 dead in a month and a half, 1/3 of what the USA lost during the whole war on two different fronts.

    Nic

A great tradegy, one that should serve to remind politicians of teh folly of running down it’s armed services just because there appears to be no immediate threat.

Mate you’ll get no argument coming from me there. The brits always stuck with us in times of need, and I hope so would we (we did during the Falklands).

That said, victory in BoB was certainly helped a great deal by the 700+ planes the Luftwaffe lost to the french and over Belgium, wouldn’t you agree?

    But…

    Nic

Yeah I’d definitly agree. It’s a great shame that the UK and France were so inadequatly equiped at the start of WW2. Many Brits forget, or don’t even know, the great death toll of brave French soilders and airman who died in the Battle of France.

The Battle of Britain was not won by Spitfires alone. The often overlooked Hurricane was the major RAF fighter numrically at the time.

Absolutly! If I remember correctly the Hurrys had a very high kill ratio in the Battle of France. They were also by far the best allied fighter apart from the Spit in the BoF I understand.

It doesn’t look mean enough, unless you add a griffon engine and a teardrop canopy for good measure.

    The Dora looks mean… I mean… MEAN!

    Nic

I take your point about the Spit not looking mean. But to me there is something meanicing about a plane looking beautiful and still being deadly. Imagine teh most beautiful woman in the world getting into a ring with Mike Tyson and knocking him out in the first round!

No I don’t, since the brits refused to send spitfires during the battle of France…

Besides I wasn’t born, were you?

    Nic

Actually a total of 67 Spits were lost in the Battle Of France

One way or another both the UK and France sleep walked into WW2. Both nations had out of date armed forces compared to the Germans. At least the UK didn’t sleep walk any further by comitting more Spits to a lost cause. Keeping them for the Battle of Briatain ensured the UKs survival and eventual return to liberate France.

Sending more Spits to France would have resulted in a German victory in the Battle of Briatin. If you are going to critise the UK for an act that was intended to protect itself from defeat then you must also critise France for capitulating to save itself further loss.

The bottom line is that if France and the UK had kept their armed forcesup to date they may not have suffered defeat.

It’s a disgrace. The French and the Americans would never stoop to such trickery to gain orders, surely?

What make you say that? or put another may WAKE UP!!!

The Spit is a girly plane IMO.

    Nic

A girly plane? What planet are you on? Try telling that to our Germanic friends! Unless where you come from “girly” means fast, agile, deadly and a world beater. Actually now that I think of it that pretty well describes some girls!

Sorry but it’s got to be a good old Spit. I know it wouldn’t stand a chance against any of the others including the Raptor (sorry Bring It On I couldn’t resist!) but it’s got class. Seeing and hearing a Spit brings a lump to my throat like no other aircraft does.
