Oh I agree with you on that,The Lanc is a far more pretty and proportioned aircraft…the Stirling is the `Ugly Duckling` of our heavies..which is why I love it…

As an initial design,I`d have to agree hampden98,shame it didn`t have the `ceiling` from the outset.heard a lot of rubbish about it being made with a wingspan to fit in the ,then, current hangers. It was a poor design as regards take -off with the undercarriage being lengthened ..otherwise the runway needed would be too long. This of course mean`t just as many aircraft being lost to undercarriage collapses as enemy action. It was a superb handling aircraft at low level however.. and could out-turn most aircraft bar the Hurricane. It`s fuselage design was very strong…if not a little overly complicated inside with all those flight engineers control wheels.
As far as the Lancaster is concerned,it was a bit of genius that lead to it being developed from the Manchester…and thank God for Merlins!!! A bit of credit has to be given to the Avro design team..the fact that design of the Manchester could accomodate the design alterations….I have always wondered why the Stirling was not adapted to carry Merlins..and whether that would of made any difference to its performance at all.

I` d sort some wire supports for it inside the legs and then get a glass or perspex display case over it…No more grime OR moths.
