Now I hate to point out the ‘bleedin’ obvious’, but this is an aeroplane – a ‘flying machine’ in the old parlance.

Is it just as obvious that it is not a ‘flying machine’, it was once, but now is incapable as such, and to make it so again would involve considerable replacement of what it currently is.
Personally I think there are enough airworthy P40s worldwide, without the need to destroy the fabric of this one.

During a visit to MAAM on 23 November, there was a B-29 turret on the floor next to the P-61 project.

Sounds like good progress.

When I was serving at RAF Ballykelly there were a number of Corsair wrecks to be seen at low tides, so clearly dumped.

Mine was the ‘S’ with silver pin-lining on black.

Its eventual successor, the Puma, was a much better car all round.

Yes on the former. Here’s a bit from Northrup’s Night Hunter by author Jeff Kolln:

All P-61s were equipped to receive a turret and gunner’s seat, and electric mount ring, all amplifiers, inverters, and wiring were installed …there was still great demand for the turrets on the B-29 bomber. The idea was to ship the turrets to field depots for installation when available in sufficient quantity.

So it was the same turret as a B-29, (presumably with an extra fairing added) – that should widen the scope for finding one.

Then there is KB976 … 🙁
