Having quite coincidentally been under the approach at Shawbury when the last ‘official’ one landed … when was that anyway?

Batch 10 appear to have been produced at Brooklands and Langley, completed 24/05/1944, but exactly which ones were produced at each location I don’t know.

Isn’t that where Alan Bristow came into the aviation business?

I gather that he did some whale spotting from helicopters, but not at the start of his career.

use of aircraft for whaling/ fish spotting…eg Walrus and earlier? well perhaps not enough for abook..article perhaps?

There was an article in ‘Aeroplane Monthly’ many years ago on the use of the Supermarine Walrus as a whale spotting aircraft.

No offence intended Webpilot, but I must be the exception to the rule because I DO have fluffy memories of the HP Herald, flying off on holidays from Heathrow in the early 80’s, sitting facing backwards at a table, taxiing out almost underneath 747s etc

I have fond memories of flying on the Brymon one to Newquay.

I’m sure scrapping was a last resort for Elvington..

Letting people know it was facing the chop might have been a good second-to-last resort; you never know, someone somewhere may have wanted it?

So aside from metaphorical online hand-wringing, is there a solution?
Would there be a point in storing some airframes indoors, in containers even, in a dismantled state, just to ensure their survival?

Sounds like a great project, good luck.

I always thought it was linen and the canvas reference was something that the ‘popular press’ of the time had coined.

In my eyes that werknummer on the rear of the panel looks like it was hand applied with a marker pen.

    My thoughts too.
