In the Hiroshima bomb ‘Little Boy’ the nuclear material was formed into a ‘critical mass’ by firing one piece into another, with high-explosive, down what was effectively a heavy sealed cannon; in the Nagasaki bomb ‘Fat Man’ high-explosive was used to surround the nuclear material and ‘crush’ it explosively into a ‘critical mass’.

Am I right in remembering reading somewhere that the cannon was based on the type used on the B25G/H models?

I got my first job in a Motor accessory shop in Plymouth Tavistock road, opposite the reservoir, it was said that a 500kg went in there but because it was so deep they decided to leave it. Well that was in 1965.

I heard that story when I lived by there is the late ’70’s.
