First Belgian NH90-NFH rolled out
(photo: flugzeugforum.de)
The RN has replaced its Sea Kings with the Merlin, Denmark has retired its Sea Kings and Australia has selected the NH-90 to replace its Sea Kings, as has Germany.
Germany has not yet decided ona replacement for its Sea King Mk.41’s, but it has noted to concider the AW101 merlin and the Sikorski S-92.
the Seaking is a good Airframe, and will be so for a few years more (in the form of the Sikorski S-61T)
Belgiums Westland Sea king Mk.48’s were originally deu to retire in 2007/8, but the remaining 4 (of 5, RS01 retired in december 2008) will continue to fly SAR missions until the NH90-NFH is fully operational (delivery expected this year)
the Sea king Mk.48 is expected to be retired late 2014/early 2015.
the RN Seaking will indeed be replaced by the Merlin (at least the HC.4’s, dont know about the AsAC.7’s). the RAF and RN Sea Kings that currently fly the SAR role (the yellow and red/grey helo’s) are to be replaced by S-92 from private contractors and operated on behalf of the HM Coast Guard.
although Norway has bought the NH90-NFH to replace its lynx helicopters, it has not decided to replace its Sea King yet, anthough they are concidering the NH90, but with the delivery problems and delays they have lately, i dont think they want more of those. they could go for the S-92, AW101 or EC225/725.
i have a question.
i know it might be a bit early but is there an operational Su-** production designation for the T-50 yet?
(like how the T-10 became the Su-27, and the S-37 became the Su-47,…)
ok, Tango III made this thread to report the latest news, thats why i like this thread (its always the first one i check when logging in).
but everytime i want to check, half this thread is full of discussions and in some cases they completly derail from the subject.
if you wanna comment on one of the reports, please make a new topic, and please stop derailing this one.
in other words…

thats a French Navy helicopter, i was talking about the Army Aviation (Armeé de Terre).
if you look at the helicopters, there’s no roundels or other type of nationality markings. i can see a 3-letter serial, but thats about it.

looks familiar,….again?

or better:

i would say the Boeing P-8 Poseidon/Neptune, in my eyes its the only logical choice, at least for the UK.
an AEW asset for Canada would indeed be a good idea, concidering the size of the country, but thats another topic.
looking at the number platforms competing, i think the F/A-18E/F, Typhoon and Rafale have the best chances.
but concidering the size of Canada and the range requirement (something the CF-18A always fell short), why not just go for the F-15SE, sure its a bit bigger and based on an older design, but it still has potential.
as for the Gripen, i really dont see it being a succes with the canucks, its a bit small, it doesnt have the range or payload. and i think the RCAF prefers a twin-engine.
but pernonally, i think this going the same way as the Dutch gripen plan, and they are going to end up with the F-35 anyway.
Russian AF re-introduces old-style soviet markings
apparrently, the reason is that the new markings and national flag dont show that well on camoflaged aircraft, so now all combat aircraft are going back to the old soviet-era red star, as it was/is the most recognisable feature on Russian aircraft.

Belgium will be joing the operation.
it was announced this morning that we will be sending 2 C-130H’s and 2 Agusta A-109’s in Medevac configuration.
the article says 1 helo, but MoD, Pieter De Crem, said in an interview there will be 2 (1 operational, 1 as backup)

for a small country with no foreign intrests or colonies, i think the Gripen will suffice for its defence needs, on the other hand if they want something with a more strategic vallue, i would recommend the Typhoon or Super Hornet.
Belgium is said to start looking at an F-16 replacement in the next gouverment legislature, after elections in 2014. so maybe, in an effort to reduce costs, i could look at a joint purchase, like what Sweden and Switserland are doing with the Gripen-E/F.
althought i believe the F-35A will still be a good contender, as its a generation ahead of anything else offered, its still concidered overpriced, underpowed and undercapable. as most European built 4.5gen aircraft have more superiour performance (even though without stealth) compared to the F-35.
if you look at terms of cost, you can buy 2 or 3 gripen’s for the price of 1 F-35, not to mention that gripens operational costs per flyinghour are only 20% of that of the F-35. the only advantage F-35 has over the competition is Stealth, witch is pretty much non-existant when flying with external loads.
