That is fascinating if true. And very good news for anyone wanting a bomber Mosquito!
It’s worth mentioning the aircraft identity The Peoples Mosquito are using is an NF.36 (RL249), which will be built as an FB.VI (after an internet poll said so) although they’ve said they want to be able to convert it to other marks every other airshow season.
Thank you JohnTerrell, that is a very helpful and informative summary.
Here are some more photos of the Mossie and the Spitfire Tr.IX chase plane, and comparison photos of the three Mossies so far completed to airworthiness at Ardmore from the NZ Civil Aircraft blog.
Politically difficult, or perhaps outright difficult?
Maybe political isn’t the right term, but several times in the last twenty years I’ve read of governments such as that of Papua New Guinea putting an end to exports of wrecks because of their historical value, and the wrecks then either being chopped up piecemeal for scrap by locals and/or deteriorating to nothing.
Shorty, I can only think the reason Japanese aircraft recoveries are so rare in comparison is because it’s so politically difficult to get the wrecks out, and the tropical conditions aren’t as healthy for the structures.
The blue-bellied Yak is currently listed with Platinum, I saw them post about it on Facebook and Twitter yesterday: http://www.platinumfighters.com/yak3m
$1500 for one article? I need to get back into writing!
Proctor restoration – the Aussie one (update in the newest Classic Wings, which arrived with me minutes ago), or the British ones? Or the static at Ashburton here in NZ?
Lovely! An unexpected pressie!
I’ve read test-flying is set for next month, when test pilot Steve Hinton is available to come. That’s exciting in itself! (But I may have it confused with the P-39, if so my apologies)
Thank you, HP numbers have long confused me! That is a very welcome explanation.
Is historical significance a consideration for “Rarest restorations currently underway?”?
I feel bad for not mentioning the Subritzky Vincent, I’m so focused on airworthy projects. At the same location is their Blackburn Baffin project – another rare one.
I can’t help with the original poster’s questions, but I have one of my own that drives me a little crazy whenever this type is mentioned: O/400 or 0/400?
I had heard the overpainted idea, that’s great. The lack of siren, less so. It makes sense from an accuracy standpoint but is deeply disappointing to learn.
The only issue I’ve experienced is when visiting a previously-visited thread, using the “new posts” icon: rather than going to the first unseen post in the thread I end up on the third or fourth post up the page…which I saw on my last visit. Odd, but not a major problem as it just means I say “Humph” and scroll down for a second or two.
I still struggle with the lack of easy quote function. The only forum I’ve ever visited where it’s been removed, rather than its misuse punished/enforced. I imagine it was a lot more work than the mods could do.
I truly am sorry for folks without Facebook access as I’m not sure how to share this otherwise, but FHCAM has put up a brief clip with Jason Muszala and the Stuka getting painted into North Africa theatre colours: https://www.facebook.com/flyingheritage/videos/vb.13883518665/321579225236267/?type=2&theater
