Judging by the value of Yak machines at the moment
Zk-YYY had been on Trademe, NZ’s eBay clone, for more than a year before the accident, most recently for NZ$799,000 (I think). The listing’s gone now.
I think that one’s based about 30min from me!
Are you sure? More of an accident waiting to happen I’d say. A PT-6 probably provides more torque and a quicker response, which means that you need to be even quicker on the rudder and elevator trim. Not a good idea on a Lizzie if you ask me! Oh well, good thing it’s only hypothetical…
In my defence, in my apprenticeship I never got to touch the engines (complex bits of kit those PT-6s!) so my thoughts are based on what looks cool as a scale model!
John: you mentioned the Tu-2, is Vadim Zadorozhny connected to this group at all? I seem to remember chat online or in a magazine of his interest in a flying example.
Whack a PT-6 on the front of the Lizzie and you’d have a great bushplane!
There’s an odd satisfaction to having paint peel off after being stripped! I’m very envious of the team who has this job!
For those playing at home, this was a Yak-11 that OFMC had converted to Allison power and registered as G-BWOE. It wasn’t completed until Ray Hanna shipped it to New Zealand, where he sold it to current owner (and pilot today) Arthur Dovey. He’s been advertising it for sale for a while now.

A cool project, and from the sound of it invaluable therapy too. It’ll be great to follow along with this.
I quite enjoyed the previous A-26 series. Thanks for sharing, Geoff.
I’ve wondered that since I was a child, I can only guess they haven’t any?
What a terrible thing that would be. Where do I sign up? 😀
Apologies for the email address faux pas, Admin. I didn’t think about that!
Dave, I may be wrong but I believe that’s “N17ZA – Formerly VH-YZK – Exported to South Africa 2017”.
The magazine Classic Wings has done a few articles on the new-build Yaks and where they are now, as well as the original examples remaining. I’d love to see a documentary on the Flight Magic or Museum Of Flight programmes but I think it’s doubtful one exists.
Re the talk of Yak-7s, there’s one representative Yak-7 flying in the US but from memory it was converted from a Yak-11/C.11. It’s all white and has a somewhat pugnacious appearance.
Paul McSweeny’s email address from Pioneer’s website is removed to avoid spam if you want to ask directly.
I think B.IV DZ542 for the UK-based Mosquito Pathfinder Trust may be “it” for a while, although I’d be very happy to learn otherwise.
