I remember first reading a feature on 1:1 Spitfire replicas in Classic Wings magazine in 2004, and realising a Jurca MJ.100 with an Allison was a much more realistic option that a real one. I’d love to see and hear Bob’s superb machine in person. Lovely!

    Duxford Saturday 19th March:
Finally, the HAC Facebook page reported the arrival at Duxford today of the first DH9 parts (missed by us all!)

😀 Fantastic! I saw a photo on Facebook but missed where it was taken. First flight edges ever closer!

I found a couple of quotes about Ray recently – I think from the big memorial thread over at PPruNe – and I think this is an appropriate place to share them:

“Ray brought a new element of spectacle and artistry to display aerobatics.” – Raymond Baxter

“Of all the displays I’ve seen since the war, and I’ve seen many, no other pilot had Ray’s ability to demonstrate precisely what the Spitfire was designed to do.” – Alex Henshaw

Lovely photo, PanzerJohn! I saw some great photos of the opening on Facebook, it looks a great facility. It’s going on my “Must Visit” list for when I get to the UK.

The new hangar also looks big enough for a Mosquito…has anyone heard anything more about the project they announced their involvement with in November? No response from them on social media to posts or messages on the subject.

A great article I thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to all involved, and I really look forward to future instalments.

I hope one day we get to read The Book of Ray and Mark.

I used to enjoy amending/updating vintage aircraft survivor details on Wikipedia, until my IP was blocked by the mods for continually attempted to point out on the TIGHAR page that they hadn’t recovered any historic aircraft, with detail of each project.

VZ345 here? That’s news to me! I didn’t think we’d had a Sea Fury since the Baghdad Fury painted as WJ232, formerly NZ based and since 2005 held by the Australian Federal Police! It’s been since 2002 since a Sea/Fury was here as far as I know.

I’m excited to hear this one – I grew up on a steady diet of Classic Wings Downunder magazines and Ian’s name would frequently pop up. Thanks for sharing Dave, I’ll have to return to give my feedback.

Lovely workmanship, yakman! Thanks for sharing. I do like the Yak-11. Are you using the original engine? (ASh-21? I’m unsure)

“maybe not as good”? They’re stunning!! The second photo, with the Mustang flight, is superb.

I’m afraid I took these photos five years ago so I’ve long forgotten the IDs being used, and which one/s will fly. That said, the reliable but possibly out-of-date ADF-Serials says NZ1535/K6721 is being restored to fly at Dairy Flat (where I took the photos) with parts from NZ1517/K6687, NZ1518/K6717, NZ1528/L7184 and NZ1544/K6703, and also there in “storage” is NZ1554/K5465. I remember seeing three Hinds – the one on its gear in my first photo, the shiny one and another fuselage next to it in a similar state.

A visit there early next month is scheduled as part of a WONZ forum meet I plan to attend, so I’ll get the info and updated photos then.

EDIT: Wikipedia (yes, I know!) says “Several former Royal New Zealand Air Force Hinds are being restored/rebuilt by The Classic Aircraft Collection at Dairy Flat near Auckland, of which NZ1517/K6687, and NZ1535/K6721 are under restoration to airworthy condition.”

In a HARTfelt and perhaps rather AUDAXious attempt to get this thread back on track, here are some (non-Afghani) Hind shots from 2011 to inspire fans and restorers:

I never expected such a pretty aeroplane to be such an effective mirror. Ex-RNZAF, serials forgotten to me at this point. A set of three or so in various states of rebuild to various conditions in a private collection in New Zealand.

The prospect of seeing just one of these fly here gets me excited, so I can’t imagine the thrill for UK enthusiasts when the subjects of this thread reappear.

Wouldn’t a return result in some red faces among the VTTS team? There was rather a lot made of the “farewell tour” and last flight…!

And I’m with CD, I’d love to read more from nostalgair2 backing up their claims.

    Also: did it roll?
