RE: Flightdeck security
I don’t agree with that logic.
As wysiwyg quite correctly pointed out once, pilots are human! Factor in toilet breaks and times for cabin crew to bring the meals along, and you’ll find the flight deck door open quite a lot during flight. That’s plenty of opportunity for someone to “intrude”.
Risk is reduced somewhat if a person is riding on the jumpseat, thereby providing an obstacle to an uninvited guest.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-12-02 AT 01:43 PM (GMT)]I still think your sentiment is a little extreme. I think it is very unlikely that loco airlines are able to offer “unrealistic” fares because they can screw their suppliers.
I usually find the fares on offer about the same as the scheduled airlines personally. On two a recent trip (AMS) and an upcoming trip (Milan) both BA and LH respectively beat (handsomely) the locos on price.
The following is a good indication – Easy is cheaper, but hardly by a significant amount:

RE: Something for Sunday
The Air Namibia one is unusual.
I flew with them once, from Windhoek to Heathrow in 1999. They were operating a 747-400 combi which attracted pax from all over southern/central Africa.
I personally remember connecting through Lusaka and Livingstone with them in a Beech 1900 in order to make the connection at Windhoek – a “real Africa” journey.
I believe they have replaced the 747 with an A330 in an all economy config.
RE: Flightdeck security
Why?
RE: Ryanair Plane runs over fellow pilot!
If ground handling companies are being scr#wed by loco airlines, why did they sign contracts with them?
RE: Airlines Not liable for DVT, a court rules.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-12-02 AT 06:19 PM (GMT)]I disagree Kev. Cramped seating does not equal negligence.
When I fly, I stretch my muscles every few hours. I go for long wanders to the toilet at least once every 5 hours, meandering around the cabin. I alternate my foot position – either stretching out with my feet under the seat in front, or on the footrest. I drink plenty of water. I started wearing Scholl flightsocks the last few times.
If I’m awake, there’s less chance of me being immobile than if I sleep. I stay awake through a combination of IFE, a book, jotting things down on a pad of paper. I bring a choccie bar on board, and I also bring along 2 bottles of mineral water and two cans of Nescafe instant. I bring my MD player and a few disks. Even pro plus tablets are an option, though I have only taken these when studying and not when flying somewhere.
If you take an aisle seat, you’re OK. I never, ever take a window seat or (even worse) those horrible middle-of-row seats unless Im flying with family or friends.
Conclusion: passenger have the information and the ability they need to substantially reduce the risk of DVT. Realistically, seat pitch will not improve in cattle class. We’re stuck with our 31 or 32 inches. But with what I’ve said above, that’s just about enough unless you’re 6 foot 6. What happened to the great British traditon of making do, Kev?
RE: Air Trans recieves its 50th Boeing 717
The 717 is however, a nice aircraft to fly on. When you’re flying as a couple, the 3-2 seating configuration is nice.

As far as I know, hospitals do try and move patients a bit so as to avoid bed sores and so forth.
If negligence = injury then yeah, of course they should be sued.
RE: New Virgin Atlantic Route
It used to be that passengers flew to Lagos and connected through to the main centres – Port Harcourt, Abuja, Warri and so on for the oil and places like Kano for other business.
However a lot of European expats expressed concern about the safety of Nigerian airlines. They are collectively the Cubana of Africa, only worse by all accounts. There were also reports of big difficulties connecting through LOS due to corruption.
A friend of mine went out about 5 years ago – going through immigration, he handed his passport over. “One minute, sir.” The chap walked off, then someone else came back to him and said “may I see your passport please”.
“No, your colleague has it”
“One minute please sir”
“Sir, we do not have your passport. You cannot enter the country without one, unless you pay a fee”
So my friend peeled out the greenbacks and his passport seemed to matertialise out of thin air… Obviously, this bribe was on top of the usual entrance fee.
Solution to all these problems:
Reduce LOS frequences and start serving ABV and PHC and even Kano.
RE: Air Trans recieves its 50th Boeing 717
Because it is not an aircraft that is easy to mix with the rest of the fleet.
Go for a 737NG and you have a range of sizes from the -600 to the -900 all sharing much commonality. The Airbus A320 family commonality is also famous.
But the 717 is an oddball – one size only. It also requires longer runways, which rules it out of marginal airports like IOM, JER and GCI and I’m sure hundreds of others.
