RE: Air Marshalls on U.K Flights

Well I’m not a pilot, but my view is that this is a bad move.

Plug the odds into even a crude risk matrix and you’ll see it’s safer to rely on providence than trust a gun toter.

    Congratulations and well done.

Did you chose the 747 for flying reasons or because, as a more numerous aircraft at present, they fly more places so you have more variety?

    747 upstairs is funny.

They usually have a shelf between the window seats and the window which I reckon reduces elbow room throughout the cabin.

On the other hand you could well be flying on a 737 or something, that’s what it feels like upstairs! I’ve only done it on the -400 so I don’t know what the smaller cabins on earlier 747’s were like.

I think someone is feeling very sheepish over an absurd knee jerk reaction to this. It’s also strange how no one is condemning the airling over this. If it happened in any other walk of life there would be recriminations, law suits, you name it.

It reminds me of those images in the US where a guy leans on a counter at an airport and the dumb female worker instantly screams “don’t come near me!! rape!! rape!!”.

Jetblue fly from Long Beach to Oakland, which is roughly in the ballpark geographically, I think. Fares are about USD 30 each way. Go to jetblue.com

Or Southwest also fly to Oakland from LAX. But only the majors seem to do LAX-SFO as far as I know.

Frankly, American and United aren’t too expensive. I found them £87 rtn (say USD 120) on Expedia.

    I’ve heard the same rumour.

I just can’t put much credence to it though. A new startup which flies two leased Beech 1900D’s and is currenctly openly competing with BA by virtue of the winning tactic of offering HIGHER fares. They must want the Euromanx marketing expertise!

RE: Revamp at BA spreads to regional operations

Running a regional airline which has high frequency services from small airports using little prop aircraft is a whole different ball game to what BA like to do.

It’s not even something you’ll make loads of money from, even if you are superb at running it.

I’m still not sure why BA got involved in this sort of thing in the first place!

I suspect BA have actually realised thay aren’t able to manage all the regional ops, which is why they are getting rid of quite a few.

I think the likes of Eastern will become franchise airlines and pick a lot of it up.

RE: Revamp at BA spreads to regional operations

This could be good news actually. The esoteric bits of the operations (eg GCI and IOM ops) could be restored to independent franchise carriers or to new airlines totally independent of BA. With governmental pressure (which I know the IOM Government will use) the LHR links may even be restored.

Totally agree about reducing the excessive number of different types though. Dash 8-300, ATR-72, ATP….they all do the same job! They even have a mixed bag of BAe 146’s and Avro RJ’s.

RE: Friday the 13th, did strike yesterday!

I used to think it was crap too.

But then I changed my mind this Friday.

I woke up late, about 8.15 AM. I rushed into the shower and decided to shave in the shower to save time. Well for the first time in over 2 years, I cut myself shaving. Blood everywhere. So I cleaned up, jumped into the car and headed for a traffic jam. Sitting in stationary traffic, I was jolted forward – some joker had pressed his accelerator in stationary traffic. I got out, and discovered a colleague of mine had done it and she was a jibering wreck.

I then got to work and at 9:03 AM got an earful from a client about how bad our service was (which it wasn’t – a bank had messed up and everyone was trying to cover their backsides).

Anyway, nothing to do with aviation, sorry. Can I redeem this thread by saying that maybe my luck on Friday was pschosomatic – ie. maybe I subconsciously thought things would go wrong, so they did. This can happen to pilots and ATCOs I suppose!

    Certainly made me think!

    RE: Plane age

I went on a B720 of Middle Eastern Airlines from Damascus to Larnaca in the late 80’s (the home airport of Beirut was proably rubble at that point). It must have been early 60’s vintage I reckon.

    RE: My thoughts on security

What you mean by “sky marshall” is “bouncer” – some big ugly thick brute of a guy who takes pleasure in taking charge.

I just think that might cause more trouble – intoxicated troulble makers might be freaked out and start to fight with him.
